Overview

EN 622-5:2009 - Fibreboards: Requirements for dry process boards (MDF) is a European Standard published by CEN that specifies product requirements for medium density fibreboard (MDF) produced by the dry process (as defined in EN 316). The standard covers property limits, test methods and compliance rules for MDF intended for dry and humid conditions, non‑load‑bearing and load‑bearing uses, light and ultra‑light panels, and rigid underlays. Note: the numerical values in EN 622-5:2009 describe product properties and are not to be used directly as characteristic values for structural design calculations.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification
    • Defines MDF panel types for dry conditions (MDF) and humid conditions (MDF.H), plus load‑bearing variants (e.g., MDF.LA, MDF.HLS), light/ultra‑light types and MDF.RWH for rigid underlays.
  • Performance properties specified
    • Typical properties governed include swelling in thickness, internal bond, bending strength, and modulus of elasticity. Requirements are given by nominal thickness ranges.
  • Statistical compliance
    • Product compliance is assessed using percentile criteria (5th percentile for most properties; 95th percentile for swelling in thickness) based on testing according to EN 326‑1.
  • Moisture resistance options
    • For boards intended for humid conditions the standard allows either:
      • Cyclic moisture testing (EN 321 + EN 317) or
      • Boil test (EN 1087‑1) with the modified procedure in Annex A.
  • Verification and factory control
    • Includes provisions for factory production control, external control and sampling/testing intervals.
  • Marking and supplementary properties
    • Clause 7 addresses marking requirements for construction use and other applications; Clause 6 lists optional supplementary properties (e.g., surface absorption).

Practical applications

  • Interior fitments and furniture panels for use in dry environments.
  • Panels for humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms when meeting MDF.H criteria.
  • Load‑bearing applications for limited short‑term/higher loads (consult EN 12871 when panels are used specifically for floors, walls or roofs).
  • Light and ultra‑light MDF for non‑load‑bearing partitions, fittings and furniture components.
  • Rigid underlays (MDF.RWH) for roofing and wall systems where specific stiffness and moisture criteria are required.

Who uses this standard

  • MDF manufacturers and product developers (product specification, quality control).
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors (type testing, factory production control).
  • Architects, specifiers and procurement teams (selecting appropriate MDF types for interior building applications).
  • Regulatory bodies and certification schemes in the European Economic Area.

4 Requirements 4.1 General Dry process boards shall comply with the general requirements of EN 622-1 together with the relevant requirements set out in 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5 and 4.6 of this European Standard. Some supplementary properties and their appropriate test methods are given in Clause 6. The requirements in Tables 3 to 11 shall be met by 5 percentile values (95 percentile values in the case of swelling in thickness), based on the mean test values for individual panels and calculated in accordance with EN 326-1. In the case of swelling in thickness, they shall be equal to or less than the values in the tables, and in the case of all other properties, they shall be equal to or greater than the values in Tables 3 to 11. The values in Tables 3 to 11 for both bending strength and modulus of elasticity shall apply to test results obtained in the weakest direction in the plane of the panel. Properties not required for specific thickness ranges are marked "—". With the exception of swelling in thickness and internal bond after boil test (see Tables 4, 6, 8 and 11), the values given in the tables are characterised by a moisture content in the material corresponding to a temperature of 20 °C and a relative humidity of 65 %.
