Overview
EN 634-2:2007 (CEN) specifies requirements for cement‑bonded particleboards bonded with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) intended for use in dry, humid and external conditions. It is part of the EN 634 series and complements general requirements in EN 634‑1. The standard defines performance criteria, sampling and test methods, factory production control and marking (including CE marking for construction market placement under EN 13986).
Key SEO terms: EN 634-2:2007, cement-bonded particleboard, OPC bonded particleboards, CEN, CE marking, EN 13986.
Key topics and technical requirements
Scope and materials
- Applies to particleboards bonded with OPC; boards using other cements can comply if values are declared according to EN 13986.
- Confirms cement-bonded particleboard contains no asbestos.
Specified properties (statistical requirements)
- Requirements are expressed as percentile values calculated per EN 326‑1.
- Principal property limits include:
- Density: ≥ 1 000 kg/m³ (all thicknesses)
- Bending strength: ≥ 9 N/mm²
- Modulus of elasticity (bending): Class 1 ≥ 4 500 N/mm², Class 2 ≥ 4 000 N/mm²
- Internal bond: ≥ 0.5 N/mm²
- Thickness swelling (24 h): ≤ 1.5%
- Internal bond after cyclic test: ≥ 0.3 N/mm²
- Swelling after cyclic test: ≤ 1.5%
Supplementary properties (manufacturer may supply)
- Dimensional changes (EN 318), impact resistance (EN 1128), screw withdrawal (EN 320), frost resistance (EN 1328), creep/duration of load (ENV 1156), structural tests (EN 789 / EN 1058).
Quality control & verification
- Sampling and test methods referenced (EN 326‑1, EN 326‑2, EN 326‑3).
- Factory production control required with defined maximum test intervals (e.g., thickness/length/width checks every 2–8 hours per thickness; mechanical and swelling tests on 24 h to weekly intervals depending on property).
Marking & CE
- Boards for construction must be marked per EN 13986 and carry CE marking when placed on the EEA market.
- Alternative marking options and optional colour coding (two white + one brown stripe) indicate suitability for dry, humid and external use.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Intended users:
- Board manufacturers and quality managers (production and FPC)
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors
- Architects, structural engineers and specifiers selecting materials for floors, walls and roofs
- Contractors and building product importers/exporters in the EEA
- Typical applications:
- External cladding, façades, roofing and load-bearing or non‑load‑bearing panels where cement-bonded boards are required to resist moisture, frost or biological hazards (service classes defined by EN 1995‑1‑1 and EN 335‑3).
