(Main)Lightweight Particleboards - Specifications
Lightweight Particleboards - Specifications
This European Technical Specification specifies the requirements for uncoated particleboards for use in dry conditions in non load-bearing applications with density below 600 kg/m3.
This Technical Specification applies to particleboard which is mostly homogenous and continuous in its composition and which does not contain hollow spaces, chambers or other type of cavities which can be encountered as honeycombs in sandwich panels or as tubes in extruded boards.
This Technical Specification does not give requirements for extruded particleboards (see EN 14755), flaxboards (see EN 15197) and sandwich panels.
NOTE Typical applications for lightweight boards are in furniture and non-structural applications e.g. in doors, packaging.
Leichte Spanplatten - Anforderungen
B. in Türen, Verpackungen.

Overview
CEN/TS 16368:2014 - "Lightweight Particleboards - Specifications" is a European Technical Specification that defines performance, tolerance and conformity requirements for uncoated lightweight particleboards intended for use in dry, non load‑bearing applications. It applies to boards with a mean density below 600 kg/m³ and to panels that are mostly homogeneous (no honeycombs, tubes or other cavities). Typical uses include furniture, doors, packaging and other non‑structural interior applications.
Key topics and requirements
Scope & classification
- Covers two general-purpose types for dry conditions: LP1 and LP2 (LP2 is intended also for furniture applications and has higher strength requirements).
- Excludes extruded particleboards (see EN 14755), flaxboards (EN 15197) and sandwich panels.
Physical limits
- Mean density below 600 kg/m³.
- Dry service conditions aligned with service class 1 (EN 1995‑1‑1): material moisture corresponding to 20 °C and RH mostly ≤65%.
General requirements at dispatch
- Dimensional tolerances for thickness, length and width (EN 324‑1/‑2).
- Moisture content: 5 % to 13 % (EN 322).
- Density tolerance within a board: ±10 % (EN 323).
- Formaldehyde emission: Class E1 (EN 717‑1) - i.e. air release ≤ 0.124 mg/m³.
Mechanical properties
- Specified bending strength, modulus of elasticity and internal bond per nominal thickness ranges. LP2 requires substantially higher bending strength and stiffness than LP1 (see Tables 2 and 3 in the document for numeric values).
- Test methods referenced include EN 310 (bending), EN 319 (internal bond).
Supplementary properties
- On request, manufacturers must supply test results for density (EN 323), dimensional changes (EN 318), surface soundness (EN 311), swelling (EN 317) and sand content (ISO 3340).
Verification & control
- Factory production control and sampling per EN 326‑2; external control and lot inspection per EN 326‑2 / EN 326‑3. Test intervals and sampling rules are specified.
Marking
- Required information: manufacturer ID, CEN/TS 16368, panel type (LP1/LP2), nominal thickness, formaldehyde class (E1) and batch/production week.
