Overview
ASTM E1878-97(2019): Standard Specification for Laboratory Glass Volumetric Flasks, Special Use is an international standard developed by ASTM International. This specification establishes detailed requirements for precision-grade laboratory glass volumetric flasks designed for specialized laboratory uses. The standard covers specific styles, shapes, calibration, volumetric tolerances, and marking requirements that ensure high accuracy and reliability for critical applications. Designed in accordance with global standardization principles, ASTM E1878-97(2019) is intended for use by laboratories, manufacturers, and quality control organizations that require strict conformance in volumetric measurements.
Key Topics
Types and Styles:
The standard specifies three main flask styles based on size and shape:- Style 1: Bates, sugar, wide neck (100 mL)
- Style 2: Kohlraush, enlarged cup (100, 200, 500 mL)
- Style 3: Sugar, two graduations (100–110 mL, 200–220 mL)
Accuracy and Calibration:
- Flasks must be precision grade, marked with the letter 'A' to denote compliance with all construction and accuracy requirements.
- Calibration is required according to ASTM Practice E542, ensuring reliable volumetric measurement.
Volumetric Tolerances:
- Specific tolerance values are defined for each flask style and capacity to guarantee meeting laboratory accuracy needs.
Markings and Identification:
- Permanent, legible markings-including the manufacturer or trademark, nominal capacity, “contains” or “TC” symbol, and calibration temperature (20 °C)-are mandatory.
- Flasks may include an identification or serial number.
- Each flask should have a designated laboratory marking spot for user labeling.
Construction Features:
- Neck and rim designs ensure compatibility with standard rubber stoppers.
- Flask shapes must facilitate complete emptying and easy cleaning.
- Base stability is required so flasks stand securely on inclined surfaces.
Applications
Analytical Chemistry:
Precision volumetric flasks are critical for preparing solutions and conducting accurate chemical analysis in research and industrial laboratories.Specialty Laboratory Procedures:
These flasks are suitable for applications demanding specialized shapes or graduation features, such as sugar analysis, titrations, and standard solution preparation.Quality Control Environments:
Laboratories performing regulated measurement procedures use ASTM E1878-97(2019) flasks to ensure traceability and repeatable results.Manufacturing of Laboratory Equipment:
Equipment manufacturers reference this standard to produce volumetric flasks compliant with defined accuracy, labeling, and construction requirements.
