Overview

ASTM E237-02(2024): Standard Specification for Laboratory Glass Microvolumetric Vessels (Volumetric Flasks and Centrifuge Tubes) establishes requirements for glass microvolumetric vessels, including both volumetric flasks and centrifuge tubes, intended for use in microchemistry applications. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures consistent dimensions, tolerances, material quality, and calibration procedures for laboratory glassware used in precise analytical processes where very small sample volumes are critical. Adherence to this standard promotes quality, safety, and compatibility within laboratory operations and with international regulations.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope: Covers volumetric flasks in two specified styles, and four types of centrifuge tubes:

    • Plain with conical bottom
    • Stoppered with conical bottom
    • Stoppered and graduated with conical bottom
    • Plain with cylindrical bottom
  • Design and Dimensions: Specifies critical design parameters, dimensional tolerances, and marking requirements to ensure consistency across manufacturers and laboratories.

  • Material Requirements: Mandates the use of high-quality, annealed laboratory glassware materials that meet performance and safety standards.

  • Calibration and Accuracy: Volumetric flasks and graduated tubes must be calibrated in accordance with recognized practices to achieve Class A tolerances, ensuring reliable and repeatable laboratory measurements.

  • Packaging: Requires that glassware be packaged according to relevant ASTM packaging standards to prevent damage during transport and storage.

  • International Compliance: The standard aligns with World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee principles, supporting global harmonization in laboratory glassware manufacturing and use.

Applications

ASTM E237-02(2024) compliant laboratory glass microvolumetric vessels have widespread applications in:

  • Microchemical Analysis: Facilitates precise handling and measurement of minute liquid volumes, essential in clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical research, materials testing, and environmental monitoring.

  • Research and Development: Used in research laboratories requiring high-accuracy volumetric measurements for developing new compounds, quality control procedures, and method validation.

  • Clinical and Biomedical Laboratories: Suitable for sample preparation, centrifugation, and quantitative analysis where small sample volumes are involved.

  • Educational Settings: Enables practical instruction on microchemistry techniques, glassware handling, and volumetric analysis to students and trainees in academic laboratories.

  • Quality Assurance Laboratories: Ensures reproducibility and traceability in analytical testing through standardized, accurately calibrated glassware.

Related Standards

ASTM E237-02(2024) is closely related to a suite of ASTM laboratory glassware standards, which address glass quality, calibration, packaging, and performance, including:
