Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium-Silicon Alloy Welded Tube
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the standard for welded tube UNS N08330 and UNS N08332 alloys intended for use in heat resisting applications and general corrosive service. The tubes shall be manufactured from flat-rolled alloy by an automatic welding process with no addition of filler metal. The tubes shall also undergo cold-working subsequent to welding and prior to final heat treatment. Material properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and hardness and other requirements such as grain size and annealing temperature shall all be evaluated.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers alloys UNS N08330 and UNS N08332 in the form of welded tube intended for heat resisting applications and general corrosive service.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to become familiar with all hazards including those identified in the appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this product/material as provided by the manufacturer, to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices, and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM B739-03(2023): Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium-Silicon Alloy Welded Tube provides requirements for the manufacture, chemical composition, and mechanical properties of welded tubes made from UNS N08330 and UNS N08332 alloys. These tubes are specifically intended for heat-resistant applications and general corrosive service. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures quality and consistency in the production of welded tubes used in demanding industrial environments.
Key Topics
- Material Grades: Covers UNS N08330 and UNS N08332 nickel-iron-chromium-silicon alloys.
- Manufacturing Process: Tubes are produced from flat-rolled alloy using an automatic welding process with no addition of filler metal. Cold-working follows welding and takes place prior to final heat treatment.
- Mechanical Properties: Specifies minimum yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and informative hardness ranges for both alloys in their annealed conditions.
- Chemical Composition: Sets strict limits for elements such as manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, copper, lead, tin, with iron as the remainder.
- Dimensional Requirements: Tubes are manufactured to specific outside or inside diameter, wall thickness, and length as detailed in purchaser specifications.
- Heat Treatment: Outlines minimum annealing temperatures for both alloys to ensure optimal properties.
- Inspection and Certification: Requirements for material testing, product analysis, and witnessing of manufacturing or testing processes can be specified by the purchaser.
- Safety and Compliance: Encourages conformity with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and relevant safety, health, and environmental practices.
Applications
ASTM B739 welded tubes are widely applied in industries where high resistance to heat and corrosion is critical. Key use cases include:
- Petrochemical processing: For heat exchangers, boiler tubes, and reformer units exposed to high temperatures and corrosive gases.
- Industrial furnaces: Components such as radiant tubes and muffle tubes where superior oxidation resistance is essential.
- Power generation: Steam generator tubing and superheater tubes in environments subject to temperature cycling and corrosive media.
- Chemical processing: Tubing for equipment subject to acidic or caustic exposure, where both durability and integrity are vital.
Benefits of ASTM B739-compliant welded tubes include enhanced operational safety, reduced downtime, and lower maintenance costs due to their reliable performance in severe service conditions.
Related Standards
Several other ASTM standards and referenced documents provide additional requirements or complementary guidance for nickel alloy welded tubes:
- ASTM B536: Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium-Silicon Alloys Plate, Sheet, and Strip, which are source materials for tube formation.
- ASTM B751: Specification for General Requirements for Nickel and Nickel Alloy Welded Tube, covering general rules and testing protocols.
- WTO TBT Principles: The standard aligns with World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee principles on international standardization.
