Overview
ASTM B536-19 is the internationally recognized standard specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium-Silicon Alloys (UNS N08330 and N08332) Plate, Sheet, and Strip. Developed by ASTM International, this standard defines the requirements for flat-rolled products intended for heat resisting applications and environments with general corrosive service. The specification covers product forms including plate, sheet, and strip, ensuring consistency in chemical composition, mechanical properties, and surface finish for advanced industrial use.
Key Topics
- Material Grades: Focuses on the nickel-iron-chromium-silicon alloys UNS N08330 and UNS N08332, specifying precise composition and processing.
- Chemical Composition: Defines limits for elements such as manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, copper, lead, and tin, ensuring optimal alloy performance.
- Mechanical Properties: Sets standards for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness in the annealed condition, supporting reliable performance at room temperature.
- Annealing Requirements:
- UNS N08330 must be annealed at a minimum of 1900°F (1040°C).
- UNS N08332 requires a minimum annealing temperature of 2100°F (1150°C) and must meet a defined grain size.
- Finish Options: Describes commonly applied finishes for plate, sheet, and strip forms, including:
- No. 1 (hot-rolled, annealed, descaled)
- No. 2D (dull, cold-rolled)
- No. 2B (bright, cold-rolled)
- Bright-annealed (reflective finish retained in a controlled atmosphere)
- Dimensional Tolerances: Refers to ASTM B906 for permissible variations in dimensions and weights.
- Edge Types: Outlines available edge conditions for strips, such as rolled, slit, or square edges.
Applications
ASTM B536-19 alloys are specifically engineered for challenging environments where both heat resistance and corrosion resistance are critical. Typical applications include:
- Furnace Components: Liners, muffles, trays, and heat shields subjected to high temperatures and thermal cycling.
- Chemical Processing: Equipment and piping that handle corrosive substances at elevated temperatures.
- Power Generation: Components in steam generation, heat exchangers, and superheaters.
- Petrochemical Industry: Reactor parts, flare stacks, and combustors needing protection from hot, corrosive gases.
- General Fabrication: Where metallic stability and durability are essential in aggressive industrial settings.
Related Standards
To support comprehensive material selection and product quality, reference is made to other ASTM standards:
- ASTM B906: General Requirements for Flat-Rolled Nickel and Nickel Alloys Plate, Sheet, and Strip - covers overarching criteria for similar alloy products.
- ASTM B899: Terminology Relating to Non-ferrous Metals and Alloys - provides authoritative definitions for terminology used.
- ASTM E527 & SAE J1086: Practices for Numbering Metals and Alloys (UNS), which outline the Unified Numbering System for alloy identification.
Practical Value
Using ASTM B536-19 provides several advantages:
- Consistent Quality: Manufacturers and fabricators can rely on standardized chemical and mechanical criteria for high performance.
- International Acceptance: Products certified under this standard meet global trade and regulatory requirements.
- Design Assurance: Engineers are assured of properties like grain size, mechanical strength, and finish types, facilitating precise specification for demanding projects.
- Enhanced Performance: Protects against material failure in aggressive service, reducing maintenance and downtime.
ASTM B536-19 is essential for stakeholders in high-temperature and corrosive industrial sectors, enabling the production and specification of durable nickel-iron-chromium-silicon alloy products. This ensures long-term performance and global interoperability in critical applications.
