This document specifies the quality assurance procedures that are applicable to ensure that delivered gaskets comply with the relevant product standards. This document sets down procedures by which a user can have confidence that the salient features of each batch of gaskets or gasket materials delivered to them will be constant.
The gasket types covered by this document are those that are within the scope of the EN 1514 series and EN 12560 series and are simultaneously within the scope of the EN 1591 series. An exception is those gaskets intended solely for domestic fluids (like water, waste water ...) which are based on rubber with or without reinforcement like fillers and/or inserts.

This document details generic gasket parameters for use in EN 1591-1 during preliminary calculations during which the type of gasket to be used in an application is to be decided. Once the gasket type has been decided the parameters for gaskets of that type from the different potential commercial suppliers should be used in further calculations as within a gasket type there will be differences depending upon the supplier.
WARNING - For the final calculations using the method given in EN 1591-1 the reader is directed to obtain gasket parameters for the selected generic type of gasket from the intended gasket manufacturer. This is because the data for a generic gasket type will vary between manufacturers. This variation can be seen in the tables of data which are embodied in this document.

This European Standard specifies the dimensions, design, types, designation, materials and marking of spiral wound gaskets for use with type A flat face or type B raised face flange facings complying with EN 1759-1 for the following Class designations:
- Class 150, to Class 1 500 for nominal sizes DN 15 to DN 600, and
- Class designation 2 500 up to and including DN 300.
The centering rings for the spiral wound gaskets according to this standard are sized for use with imperial bolting.
The dimensions of spiral wound gaskets for tongue and groove flange facing types and spigot and recess flange facing types to EN 1759-1 are not included in this standard.
Such gaskets may be available, however, for these types of flange and the purchaser is advised to consult the manufacturer as to their availability. Similarly, for slip-on or screwed flange types, the manufacturer should be consulted about availability.
NOTE Dimensions of other types of gasket for use with flanges complying with the requirements of EN 1759-1 are given in EN 12560-1, EN 12560-3, EN 12560-4 and EN 12560-5, EN 12560-6 and EN 12560-7.

This European Standard is applicable to the bolting technicians, and their supervisors, the responsible engineers, who disassemble, assemble and tighten the bolted connections of whatever shape of critical service pressurised systems. A failure of a connection in such a system would endanger personnel, plant or the environment. A route for achieving competency in the skills required to safely and successfully disassemble, assemble and tighten pressurised bolted joints of any shape to a design bolt load using documented work instructions is given in this document. The aim is the establishment of a joint capable of maintaining a leak-free status throughout its’ service life.
This European Standard provides a modular training syllabus and an assessment process that can be used to determine the competency of personnel who disassemble, assemble and tighten bolted connections, whatever their shape, fitted to pressurised equipment containing a medium at any combination of temperature and pressure.
Bolting technicians have to assemble bolted connections of different levels of complexity. For this reason, training matrices dealing with bolted connections of various levels of complexity and for different types of pressurised bolted connections are given in this document. The modular structure created allows a bolting technician, once competency in the foundation level has been achieved, to obtain competency in higher levels as required.
Certification to this European Standard provides an attestation of general competency in accordance with the stated syllabi and assessments.
Certification to this European Standard does not represent an authorisation to operate, since this remains the responsibility of the employer, and the certified person may require additional specialised knowledge of employer-specific procedures, processes and equipment.

1.1 General
This European Technical Specification establishes a process for training and competency assessment of per-sonnel who disassemble, assemble and tighten bolted joints such as fitted to equipment subject to the Pres-sure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC (PED), in the content of this Technical Specification named "PED".
1.2 Requirement for competency
Training and competence, experience and knowledge are often confused with each other. Training is no guar-antor of competence, nor is experience a guarantor of knowledge and understanding. Training, experience, and assessment of knowledge are all required to achieve competence.
Design codes for mechanical joints (see for example EN 1591-1 or CEN/TS 1591-3) increasingly require con-trolled bolt tightening in order to meet the specified bolt load tolerances.
The intent of this Technical Specification is to ensure personnel are competent to assemble and tighten bolted joints using the design bolt load and documented work instructions, thereby establishing a joint capable of maintaining a leak-free status throughout its’ service life.
Competency in the analysis of joint failure is not required beyond use of knowledge gained during training. A correctly assembled and tightened joint that fails in service requires specialist knowledge and is out with the scope of this Technical Specification.
1.3 Validity
This Technical Specification is applicable for bolted joints included on mechanical equipment subject to the PED, or any joint where failure would endanger personnel, plant or the environment. Such joints may or may not be fitted with a gasket.
The validity includes all bolting arrangements, both circular and non-circular, and fluids (gas or liquid) with the exception of:
_ joints having less than 4 bolts, or bolt diameters less than M16;
_ potable or fire water, sewage systems.
This Specification excludes:
_ craft personnel who are trained, examined and verified as competent in their craft training or nor
