This Technical Report provides a rationale and technical justification for certain European Standards for transportable gas cylinders, produced in accordance with the requirements of the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED), to be used for applications currently listed in the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). Its purpose is to allow gas cylinders manufactured to the European Standards and EEC directives listed in this Technical Report to be eligible for the application of a "CE" mark under the PED provided that their filling conditions fulfil the requirements of ADR/RID (P200, 4.1.4.1) in respect of portable fire extinguishers, breathing apparatus and other cylinders used as stationary pressure vessels.

This International Standard specifies the tolerances on dimensions and form for continuously cold-rolled stainless steel narrow strip, in thicknesses of up to and including 3 mm and in rolling widths of less than 600 mm. It also applies to cut lengths taken from such strip. This International Standard also specifies the tolerances on dimensions and form for continuously cold-rolled stainless steel wide strip and plate/sheet, in thicknesses from 0,3 mm to 8,0 mm and in rolling widths from 600 mm to 2 100 mm. It also applies to slit cold-rolled wide strip in widths less than 600 mm manufactured from wide strip by longitudinal slitting and to cut lengths manufactured from such strip.

This standard sets out minimum requirements for serially produced lightweight refillable gas cylinders having a water capacity exceeding 20 L but not exceeding 1000 L. The cylinders are intended only for the on-board storage of high pressure compressed natural gas as a fuel for automotive vehicles to which the cylinders are to be fixed. Cylinders may be of any steel, aluminium or non-metallic material, design or method of manufacture suitable for the specified service conditions. This standard does not cover metal liners or cylinders of stainless steels or of welded construction.
