Overview

SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 is a European standard that specifies requirements for coaxial indoor drop cables designed for analogue and digital signal transmission within the frequency range of 5 MHz to 1 000 MHz. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard is part of the EN 50117 series and targets cables used in cable television, sound distribution, and interactive service networks. These cables are essential for reliable signal transmission in CATV, MATV, SMATV, and Broadband Communication Technology (BCT) systems, supporting both one-way and two-way communications.

The standard outlines the applicable test methods and essential requirements concerning the electrical, mechanical, environmental, and fire performance characteristics of indoor drop coaxial cables. It supports compliance with European directives, such as the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), by ensuring cable safety and performance in relevant applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application

    • Covers coaxial indoor drop cables operating at 5 MHz to 1 000 MHz
    • Used for both analogue and digital transmission in home and commercial environments
    • Supports CATV, MATV, SMATV, and BCT signals
  • Cable Construction and Design

    • Specifies requirements for inner and outer conductors, dielectric materials (such as polyolefins), and PVC or halogen-free flame retardant sheaths
    • Insists on reliable sheath marking and labeling for traceability, including attenuation values, screening class, Euro-class, and supplier name
  • Performance and Safety

    • Defines electrical performance parameters (attenuation, characteristic impedance, return loss, screening)
    • Specifies mechanical robustness (crush, bend, flexure tests)
    • Addresses environmental endurance (temperature cycles, cold performance)
    • Requires fire performance testing according to relevant EN standards
  • Testing and Quality Assurance

    • Mandates compliance with test methods from the EN 50117 and EN 50289 series
    • Describes procedures for electrical, mechanical, and environmental tests to ensure ongoing cable integrity
  • Regulatory Compliance

    • Ensures alignment with the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU)
    • Describes material requirements under REACH and RoHS directives
    • Relates essential cable characteristics to Construction Products Regulation (CPR) for fixed installations

Applications

The cables specified by SIST EN 50117-9-1:2026 are widely used in:

  • Television Signal Distribution
    • Connecting subscriber equipment within residential or commercial buildings to cable television provider networks
  • Sound and Data Networks
    • Suitable for sound signal and broadband data transmission, supporting various interactive and digital services
  • Interactive Home Services
    • Enable reliable and high-quality signal paths for smart devices and home automation where two-way communication is required
  • Integrated Cable Systems
    • Used as indoor drop cables in complex RF and broadband communication systems, including full service television and multimedia setups

Typical users include cable network providers, property managers, system integrators, installers, and manufacturers of communication infrastructure.
