SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 is the Slovene adoption published by SIST of ETSI EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1. It is an EMC standard for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) equipment and associated ancillary equipment, and it sets the test conditions, performance assessment and performance criteria used to judge EMC behavior. Manufacturers, test laboratories, quality teams and buyers use it together with EN 301 489-1 to check compliance for DECT radio equipment under the EMC and R&TTE frameworks.

What does SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 specify?

SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 specifies the DECT-specific EMC conditions that sit on top of the common requirements in EN 301 489-1. It covers how to test the equipment, how to assess performance, and what counts as acceptable behavior during and after EMC exposure.

The scope includes DECT equipment and associated ancillary equipment. It excludes the antenna port and enclosure port technical specifications, which are covered by the relevant product standards for effective use of the radio spectrum.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 7:

  • Scope
  • References
  • Definitions and abbreviations
  • Test conditions
  • Performance assessment
  • Performance criteria
  • Applicability overview

Annex A gives the DECT equipment types covered by the document.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003?

SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 mainly tells users how to set up tests, how to handle host-dependent equipment, and how to judge whether the equipment still works as intended under EMC stress. In practice, it is the part that turns the generic EMC rules in EN 301 489-1 into DECT-specific test practice.

Test conditions and test signals

Clause 4 applies the general test conditions from EN 301 489-1 and adds DECT-specific arrangements. For speech equipment, audio can be supplied acoustically or through provided electrical connections, while non-speech equipment uses digital input through a cable, test jig or host. This matters because the test setup must match how the product is actually used.

Normal test modulation and link simulation

Clause 4.5 requires DECT equipment to be driven with the normal test modulation used for that equipment type, based on the DECT common interface and loop-back behavior. When transmitter and receiver are tested together, the link is looped back and monitored as a system. This matters because the test must exercise the real radio link, not only isolated ports.

Host-dependent equipment and plug-in cards

Clause 5.2 gives two assessment routes for equipment that needs a host to function. The manufacturer must declare whether compliance is shown with a composite host combination or with a test jig plus three different hosts. This matters for plug-in cards and embedded radio parts because the host can change the EMC behavior.

Performance assessment of user functions and speech

Clause 5.3 checks that the communications link stays up and that user control functions and stored user-defined data are not lost. It also includes an audio breakthrough method for equipment with analogue speech circuits, with measurement setups shown in Figures 1 and 2. This matters because EMC problems often show up as dropped links, corrupted data or unwanted audio on the speech path.

Performance criteria for transceivers and receive-only equipment

Clause 6 separates continuous and transient phenomena, and it distinguishes transceivers from receive-only equipment. The equipment has to maintain the link, keep working after exposure, and, where relevant, avoid unintentional transmission. This matters because a product can pass a measurement yet still fail if the user notices loss of service or control.

Applicability and classification

Clause 5.5 classifies equipment for vehicular use or fixed use when it is intended to be powered from a vehicle battery or AC mains network. Clause 7 points back to the emission and immunity port applicability tables in EN 301 489-1 and adds no special conditions for radio equipment in scope. This matters when selecting the right EMC setup and the right class for the test report.

What terms does SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 define?

  • bearer - The wanted RF burst used to establish and keep the communications link.
  • DECT equipment - DECT apparatus that includes one or more transceivers and/or receivers meeting EN 300 175-2.
  • host equipment - Equipment that provides extra function to the radio part and contains the installed transceiver part.
  • speech equipment - Cordless equipment with microphones and/or loudspeakers for acoustic audio.
  • non-speech equipment - Cordless equipment intended for digital data rather than acoustic speech.
  • BER - Bit Error Ratio, used here to judge data performance during testing.
  • CT - Continuous phenomena applied to cordless telephone or communication Transceivers.
  • TT - Transient phenomena applied to cordless telephone or communication Transceivers.

Who uses SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003?

SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 is used by DECT equipment manufacturers, suppliers of ancillary equipment, EMC test laboratories, and conformity assessment teams. It is also used by quality managers and buyers who need to confirm that a DECT handset, base transceiver, subscriber terminal, or plug-in radio part has been tested against the right EMC conditions.

It is most relevant for equipment used for wireless access to telephone subscriber lines, speech and data transmission in private networks, and fixed wireless access to the PSTN.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003?

  • EN 301 489-1 - Provides the common technical requirements, general test conditions, emission and immunity requirements, and the base performance framework.
  • EN 300 175-2 - Defines the DECT physical layer used for modulation and burst timing references.
  • EN 300 175-3 - Defines the DECT MAC layer and the loop-back test behavior used in system testing.
  • I-ETS 300 176 - Gives the approval test specification and the acoustic test arrangements referenced for speech equipment.
  • ITU-T Recommendation O.153 - Supplies the D-M2 pattern used in the looped-back data sequence.

What does the SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 document contain?

SIST EN 301 489-6 V1.2.1:2003 contains the test conditions, signal arrangements, and performance checks needed to assess DECT equipment under EMC stress. It also contains the host-equipment assessment options, the audio breakthrough method, and the performance criteria for continuous and transient phenomena.

Figures 1 and 2 show the audio breakthrough measurement and calibration setups. Annex A defines the DECT equipment types covered by the standard. The document also points users to the relevant tables in EN 301 489-1 for port applicability.
