Overview

EN 2714-009:2007 (CEN) is a product standard for aerospace electrical cables - single- and multicore, screened (spiral) and jacketed - specified for use in on-board aircraft electrical systems at operating temperatures between −55 °C and 260 °C. The standard covers YAG X3 laser printable cables and requires compatibility with alternative marking methods (hot stamp and ink-jet) in accordance with EN 3838. It defines materials, construction, performance tests and identification/marking rules for reliable high-temperature aerospace cabling.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & application: Intended for general-purpose aircraft wiring where high temperature resistance and traceable marking are required. Cables have 1 to 4 cores; 2–4 core cables must be twisted (EN 2235).
  • Materials & construction:
    • Cores per EN 2267-003 (nominal sections from ~0.15 mm² to 5 mm²; AWG references provided).
    • Spiral screen: nickel-plated copper stranded spiral (plating and tests per EN 2083 and EN 3475-100).
    • Outer jacket: multi-layer system - polyimide layer (30 µm) coated both sides with fluorocarbon (2.5 µm), PTFE second layer (~0.07 mm) wound opposite to first layer, plus a dispersion fluorocarbon top coat (≥15 µm) to accept YAG X3 laser marking.
    • No filler cores permitted.
  • Marking: Must accept YAG X3 laser marking; also compatible with hot stamp and ink-jet per EN 3838.
  • Performance & tests (references to EN 3475-100): visual, mass, dimensions, ohmic resistance, voltage proof, insulation/surface resistance, accelerated ageing, shrinkage/delamination, thermal shock, bending/cold bend, flammability (extinguishing time ≤ 3 s), thermal endurance (40 000 h at 260 °C), resistance to fluids, notch propagation, scrape abrasion, plating tests, smoke density and toxicity.
  • Quality & designation: Quality assurance per EN 9133; designation and identification rules provided (example code: EN2714-009B002F).

Applications and users

  • Primary users: aerospace cable manufacturers, aircraft OEMs, electrical/harness design engineers, procurement/specification teams, maintenance and repair organizations.
  • Practical applications:
    • High-temperature wiring in engines, environmental control systems, and other heat-exposed aircraft zones.
    • Locations requiring durable, permanently legible markings (YAG X3 laser) for traceability and maintenance records.
    • Systems where flame, smoke and toxicity performance are critical.

Related standards

  • EN 2714-002 (general screened & jacketed rules)
  • EN 2235 (twisting, technical spec)
  • EN 2267-003 (core insulation / ink-jet printable references)
  • EN 2083 (conductors)
  • EN 3475-100 (test methods)
