Overview
EN 1680:2025 specifies a standardized test method to verify that valves for polyethylene (PE) piping systems maintain internal and external leaktightness while subjected to, and after removal of, a bending moment applied to the operating mechanism. Intended for valves used in PE piping for fluid transport, the method can also be applied to other valve materials when referenced in a product standard. The procedure is designed for manufacturers, test laboratories, product certifiers and system designers who require reproducible assessment of valve performance under bending loads.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Assess leaktightness of PE valves during and after a bending moment applied to the operating mechanism (valve in half-open position).
- Test conditions: Test assembly immersed in a temperature-controlled tank at 20 °C (±3/−1 °C), immersion depth not exceeding 550 mm.
- Bending moment: A bending moment of 55 N·m is applied via a force at a defined leverage distance (F = M/L). Force is held for a minimum of 1 hour.
- Pressurization stages:
- Low pneumatic pressure (product standard specified or default 25 mbar) for at least 1 hour to check external leakage.
- Increased pneumatic pressure to 6 bar for at least 1 hour for further leakage assessment.
- Leakage monitoring: Internal (seat) and external (stem) leakage are recorded during and after the application and removal of the bending moment. Internal leaktightness must be verified on both sides of the valve.
- Test piece preparation: Valves are assembled with PE pipes of matching MRS/SDR when required (see EN 1555-2 or EN 12201-2). Sampling and number of test pieces follow the referring product standard (default: one test piece).
- Reporting requirements: The test report shall reference EN 1680:2025 and the referring standard and include identification, temperature, durations, pressures, applied force and leverage, results and any deviations or incidents.
Applications
This test method provides practical value to:
- Manufacturers: Validate design and material choices to ensure valve durability under mechanical stress.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies: Offer a repeatable procedure for conformity assessment and type testing.
- Specifiers and contractors: Verify that valves meet performance expectations in PE piping systems used for water, gas or other fluid transport.
- Regulators and asset owners: Assess the mechanical resilience of valves where operating mechanisms may be subject to bending loads.
Related Standards
- EN 1555-2 - PE pipes for gaseous fuels (referenced for compatible pipe materials and MRS/SDR).
- EN 12201-2 - PE pipes for water supply and pressure drainage.
- EN 837-1 - Pressure gauge requirements for measuring low pressures during tests.
For test setup and detailed procedural steps, consult EN 1680:2025 and the relevant product standard for sampling, acceptance criteria and any additional product-specific requirements.
