Overview
EN 14399-1:2015 - "High-strength structural bolting assemblies for preloading - Part 1: General requirements" (CEN) defines the general product requirements for bolt/nut/washer(s) assemblies intended for high-strength structural bolting and preloading in structural metallic works. The standard sets out how bolting assemblies are classified, assessed and verified for use in steel structures (preloading in accordance with EN 1090-2). It is a harmonized European standard used for CE marking and factory production control (AVCP) of structural fastener assemblies.
Key topics and technical requirements

- Applies to bolting assemblies suitable for preloading in structural metallic works.
- Assemblies smaller than M12 are not designed for preloading.
- Assemblies are not intended to be welded; railway rail fasteners are excluded.
- Types of assemblies
- Type HR (ductility by bolt elongation; minimum nut height ≥ 0.9·D; thread length per ISO 888).
- Type HV (ductility by engaged thread deformation; nut height ≈ 0.8·D; short thread).
- Type HRC (calibrated preload systems referenced in EN 14399-10).
- Product characteristics
- Property class: tensile strength, elongation, tensile yield strength, strength under wedge loading and related mechanical properties of bolts.
- Product grade: grade definitions for bolts, nuts, washers and direct tension indicators.
