operating in the 22 GHz to 26,625 GHz frequency range.
The applicability of the present document covers only the 24 GHz Short Range Radar (SRR) for road vehicles. The present document does not necessarily include all the characteristics which may be required by a user, nor does it necessarily represent the optimum performance achievable.
NOTE: Member States of the European Union are required to prohibit the taking into service of equipment covered by the present document after a date defined in Commission Decision 2005/50/EC (see bibliography). The present document covers transmitters intended to operate in a temporary frequency designation under the 24 GHz ECC decision ECC/DEC/(04)10) (see bibliography). The application is also subject to the EU Commission decision on 24 GHz SRR EC 2005/50/EC (see bibliography). The present document is intended to cover the provisions of Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE Directive) [1] article 3.2, which states that "… radio equipment shall be so constructed that it effectively uses the spectrum allocated to terrestrial/space radio communications and orbital resources so as to avoid harmful interference". The present document responds to the EC mandate M/329 [6] for Harmonized Standards covering Ultrawideband (UWB) applications.

SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1, a harmonized European standard for short range radar equipment in Road Transport and Traffic Telematics (RTTT) operating around 24 GHz. It specifies the radio spectrum and electromagnetic compatibility requirements, plus the test approach, for manufacturers, test laboratories, and conformity assessors working on automotive short range radar intended to meet article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive.
What does SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 specify?
SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 applies to Short Range Devices (SRDs) used in RTTT systems with an integral antenna, for ultra low power motion and distance monitoring radars for mobile applications only, and operating from 22 GHz to 26.625 GHz. In practice, it is aimed at 24 GHz Short Range Radar (SRR) for road vehicles.
The document is written as a harmonized EN under article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive, so its focus is spectrum use and harmful interference avoidance. It also places the equipment in the context of the temporary 24 GHz frequency designation and the related EU Commission and ECC decisions.
The document is organized into five main clauses:
- Scope
- References
- Definitions, symbols and abbreviations
- Technical requirements specifications
- Testing for compliance with technical requirements
It also has three annexes:
- Annex A - The EN Requirements Table (EN-RT)
- Annex B - The EN title in the official languages
- Annex C - Bibliography
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006?
SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 ties each conformity requirement to a test method, and most limits point back to EN 302 288-1. The practical message is simple: a product is judged against defined frequency, power, emission, and installation limits, and the test report must show how the result compares with those limits.
Environmental conditions
Clause 4.1 requires the provider to declare an operational environmental profile, and the equipment shall comply within that declared range. For users, this means the test and design envelope has to match the intended operating climate and conditions.
Transmitter limits
Clause 4.2.1 sets the transmitter requirements in two frequency ranges: 22.0 GHz to 26.625 GHz, and 24.050 GHz to 24.250 GHz. It covers permitted operating frequency range, maximum radiated average power density, maximum radiated peak power density, and equivalent isotropically radiated power (e.i.r.p.).
For road radar suppliers, this is the core compliance check: the transmitter must stay inside the allowed band and remain within the radiated power limits that prevent interference.
Vertical plane and unwanted emissions
Clause 4.2.1.3 covers vertical plane emission limits in the 23.6 GHz to 24.0 GHz range, and clause 4.2.1.4 covers spurious and out-of-band emissions. In practice, this controls how much energy leaks outside the intended operating channel and in unwanted directions.
Receiver and installation requirements
Clause 4.2.2 requires receiver spurious emissions to stay within the limits from EN 302 288-1, and clause 4.2.3 applies the installation requirements from annex D of EN 302 288-1. This matters because the installation can affect both compliance and real-world interference behavior.
Testing and measurement uncertainty
Clause 5 says testing must be done at representative points within the declared environmental profile, and with enough variation in conditions to support confidence in compliance. Clause 5.3 also requires measurement uncertainty to be reported, with values calculated using TR 100 028 and stated in the test report.
What terms does SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 define?
- Environmental profile - the range of environmental conditions under which the equipment must comply.
- Short Range Devices (SRDs) - short-range radio devices used here in RTTT applications.
- Road Transport and Traffic Telematics (RTTT) - road transport and traffic systems that use telematics and radar functions.
- Short Range Radar (SRR) - the automotive short-range radar application covered by this standard.
- Equivalent isotropically radiated power (e.i.r.p.) - a radiated power measure used to set transmitter limits.
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - the ability of radio equipment to operate without causing or suffering unacceptable interference.
- Ultrawideband (UWB) - the application area mentioned in the EC mandate that this standard responds to.
Who uses SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006?
SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 is used by radar equipment manufacturers, vehicle electronics suppliers, test laboratories, and regulatory or conformity assessment bodies. They use it to design 24 GHz automotive SRR products, plan compliance tests, write test reports, and check whether a product fits the harmonized European framework for article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive.
What changed in SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 follows ETSI EN 302 288-2 V1.1.1, published in January 2005, and records a one-step approval procedure leading to the May 2006 publication of V1.2.1.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006?
- ETSI EN 302 288-1 - supplies the technical requirements, measurement methods, symbols, abbreviations, and installation provisions that EN 302 288-2 refers to repeatedly.
- ETSI EN 301 489 (all parts) - provides the EMC standard for radio equipment and services.
- ETSI TR 100 028 (all parts) - gives the method for calculating measurement uncertainty.
- Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE Directive) - defines the essential article 3.2 spectrum-use objective that the standard supports.
- Directive 89/336/EEC and Directive 73/23/EEC - appear in the reference list as related directives.
What does the SIST EN 302 288-2 V1.2.1:2006 document contain?
The document contains the conformance requirements, the matching test suites, and the rule for interpreting test results and measurement uncertainty. Annex A provides the EN Requirements Table (EN-RT), which links each essential requirement to its clause and test specification and is meant to support presumption of conformity.
Annex B gives the title in multiple official languages, and Annex C lists the bibliography, including the Commission Decision on 24 GHz SRR and the ECC decision on temporary automotive short range radar use. The body of the standard also points to tables for transmitter limits and to the measurement uncertainty values that test reports must record.
