ETSI EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1 (2013-11) - Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters (ERM); Road Transport and Traffic Telematics (RTTT); Automotive radar equipment operating in the 24,05 GHz up to 24,25 GHz or 24,50 GHz frequency range; Part 2: Harmonized EN covering the essential requirements of article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive
SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014 is the SIST adoption of ETSI EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1, a harmonized European standard for automotive radar equipment used in road transport and traffic telematics. It covers narrow band short range radar in the 24.05 GHz to 24.25 GHz or 24.50 GHz range and sets the technical requirements and measurement methods used to show conformity with article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive. In practice, it is the document manufacturers, test labs and conformity assessors use to check spectrum use, emissions and installation conditions for vehicle radar equipment.
What does SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014 specify?
SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014 specifies technical requirements and methods of measurement for automotive radar equipment with an integral antenna, intended for low power motion and distance monitoring in mobile applications only, and operating in the 24.05 GHz to 24.50 GHz band. Its applicability is limited to 24 GHz Narrow Band Short Range Radar (NB SRR) for road vehicles, and the revision is aligned with Vehicle Radars (VR) requirements in revised Annex 5 of ERC Rec 70-03.
The document is organized into five clauses and two informative annexes plus one normative annex:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - References
- Clause 3 - Definitions, symbols and abbreviations
- Clause 4 - Technical requirements specifications
- Clause 5 - Testing for compliance with technical requirements
- Annex A - HS Requirements and conformance Test specifications Table (HS-RTT)
- Annex C - Bibliography
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014?
SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014 mainly controls transmitter and receiver behaviour so the radar uses the allocated spectrum without causing harmful interference. It also ties each requirement to a test method, and it makes installation and measurement uncertainty part of the conformity process.
Operating conditions and samples
Clause 4.1 requires the supplier to declare the environmental profile for operation, and the equipment must meet the standard within those declared limits. Clause 4.1.2 says the samples for measurement are chosen as defined in EN 302 858-1. In practice, this means the declared operating environment matters, and the test sample selection follows the companion part.
Transmitter requirements
Clause 4.2 covers the transmitter limits: operating frequency range, maximum radiated peak power (e.i.r.p.), dwell time and repetition time, frequency modulation range, WLAM duty cycle, unwanted vertical plane WLAM emissions in 23.6 GHz to 24.0 GHz, out of band emissions and radiated spurious emissions. These are the core spectrum-sharing checks, because they control where the radar can transmit and how much energy it can radiate.
Receiver and installation requirements
Clause 4.3.1 covers receiver spurious radiations, and Clause 4.4 requires the installation requirements from EN 302 858-1, annex C. For a buyer or integrator, this means the radar is not judged only as a device on the bench - its intended installation conditions also matter.
Testing and uncertainty
Clause 5 requires testing within the declared environmental profile, with normal and, where stated, extreme test conditions. Clause 5.2 requires the test report to include the measurement uncertainty, calculated using TR 100 028 principles, and the chosen coverage factor must be stated. Clause 5.4 applies the measurement uncertainty rules from EN 302 858-1, clause 9.
Test suite mapping
Annex A classifies each requirement as unconditional or conditional and marks the corresponding test as Essential or Other. This is useful in practice because it shows which tests are needed for presumption of conformity and which requirements depend on optional functionality, such as WLAM-related behavior or receiver co-location.
What terms does SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014 define?
- NB SRR - Narrow Band Short Range Radar, the 24 GHz road-vehicle radar use case covered by the standard.
- e.i.r.p. - equivalent isotropically radiated power, the radiated power measure used for peak power limits.
- WLAM - an operating mode referenced by the standard for duty cycle and unwanted emission limits.
- R&TTE Directive - the regulatory framework whose article 3.2 is addressed by this harmonized EN.
- HS-RTT - HS Requirements and conformance Test specifications Table, the annex table that links requirements to tests.
- Essential Radio Test Suite - the set of tests in Annex A marked Essential, used to demonstrate conformity.
- spurious emissions - unwanted emissions outside the intended transmission, controlled here for both transmitter and receiver.
Who uses SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014?
Manufacturers of automotive radar equipment use this standard to design products for the 24 GHz band and to prepare technical files. Test laboratories use it to run transmitter, receiver and installation conformance tests. Regulatory and quality teams use it to check whether a vehicle radar product fits the article 3.2 radio spectrum requirements. System integrators and vehicle suppliers use it when defining installation conditions and verifying that the radar behaves as intended in the vehicle environment.
What changed in SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014 from the previous edition?
The document history identifies V1.2.1 from July 2011 as the earlier publication and V1.3.1 as the current publication from November 2013. The foreword also shows the approval and publication dates for this edition.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014?
- ETSI EN 302 858-1 (V1.2.1) - provides the technical characteristics, limits and detailed test methods that this part references throughout.
- ETSI TR 100 028 (all parts) (V1.4.1) - provides the principles for calculating measurement uncertainty in the test reports.
What does the SIST EN 302 858-2 V1.3.1:2014 document contain?
The document contains the requirement-to-test mapping in Annex A, which is the main compliance table for article 3.2. It also contains the clause-by-clause transmitter and receiver requirements, the testing conditions, and the rules for interpreting measured results. Clause 5 points testers to normal and extreme conditions, power source requirements and measurement uncertainty reporting. The bibliography in Annex C points to related regulatory and background documents, including the CEPT/ERC recommendation on short range devices.
