Overview
SIST EN 546-2:2007 is a European standard established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies the mechanical properties of wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy foils. This standard is part two of EN 546, which addresses aluminium foil products. It provides critical guidelines for manufacturers and purchasers regarding the tensile strength, elongation, and related mechanical characteristics of aluminium foils used in various industrial and consumer applications.
The standard complements related European standards such as EN 573-3 (chemical composition limits for aluminium alloys) and EN 515 (temper designations), ensuring consistency across product specifications and quality assessments. SIST EN 546-2:2007 supersedes the earlier 1996 edition, reflecting updated mechanical property requirements and additional alloy designations like EN AW-8021B.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines mechanical properties for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy foils.
- Materials Covered: Aluminium alloys per EN 573-3, including common alloys like EN AW-1050A, EN AW-8011A, EN AW-8021B, and others.
- Mechanical Properties:
- Tensile strength ranges according to alloy and temper
- Elongation percentages measured on specified gauge lengths (50 mm and 100 mm)
- Defined testing procedures for tensile testing using parallel-sided test pieces
- Temper Designations: Aligned with EN 515 standards for classification of material states such as O (annealed), H18, H22, H24, and H26 tempers.
- Testing Methods: Specifies specimen preparation and tensile test conditions, including test speeds and gauge lengths, to ensure reproducible results.
- Rounding Rules: Test results must be rounded consistently as per Annex A, which defines precise rounding methods based on numerical significance.
- Tables of Mechanical Properties: Comprehensive tables for household/converter foil and container foil with tensile strength and elongation values per aluminium alloy and temper.
Applications
SIST EN 546-2:2007 directly supports industries engaged in the manufacture, quality control, and utilization of aluminium foil in various applications, such as:
- Household Foil Production: Ensuring foils meet strength and flexibility requirements for cooking, storage, and packaging.
- Container Foil Manufacturing: Producing foils used in food and beverage containers, demanding reliable mechanical performance.
- Industrial Use: Aluminium foils in electrical components, insulation, packaging, and decorative uses where mechanical durability is critical.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance: Facilitating supplier-purchaser agreements on mechanical expectations to ensure product consistency and regulatory adherence.
- Research & Development: Providing a framework for developing new aluminium foil products with specific mechanical characteristics.
By following this standard, manufacturers can guarantee their aluminium foils perform satisfactorily under mechanical stresses, enhancing product safety, durability, and customer satisfaction.
Related Standards
- EN 573-3: Specifies chemical composition limits and alloy designations for aluminium and its alloys; essential for understanding material makeup in conjunction with EN 546-2.
- EN 515: Defines temper designations for wrought aluminium products, which directly influences mechanical properties outlined in EN 546-2.
- EN 546-1: Covers technical conditions for inspection and delivery of aluminium foils, complementing the mechanical property specifications of part 2.
- EN 546-3: Details tolerances on dimensions for aluminium foil products.
- EN 546-4: Addresses special property requirements for aluminium foils, expanding on specific use cases or performance needs.
