Overview

SIST EN 60966-2-6:2017 is a detailed specification standard issued by the CLC that addresses radio frequency and coaxial cable assemblies specifically designed for radio and TV receivers. Covering the frequency range from 0 MHz to 3,000 MHz, this standard focuses on cable assemblies using IEC 61169-24 connectors, commonly known as type F connectors. It is applicable to coaxial cables defined under the IEC 61196 series, particularly those classified under the cable assembly subfamily F.

This edition, aligned with IEC 60966-2-6:2016, introduces technical updates including refined return loss and insertion loss requirements matched to cable types, measurement of screening effectiveness using IEC 62153-4-7 (triaxial method), and the introduction of a new screening class A+.

Key Topics

  • Frequency Range and Connectors
The standard governs assemblies operating in the 0 MHz to 3,000 MHz band, using IEC 61169-24 type F coaxial connectors. These connectors are widely applied in 75-ohm cable networks, typical for TV and radio signal distributions.

  • Electrical Performance Requirements

    • Return Loss: Minimum values range from 15 dB to over 20 dB depending on frequency bands, ensuring minimal signal reflection and high transmission quality.
    • Insertion Loss: Defined with an upper limit formula combining frequency-dependent factors, ensuring signal attenuation remains very low (e.g., < 0.4 dB/m up to 3,000 MHz).
    • Screening Effectiveness: Classified in two categories, Class A and the newly introduced Class A+, verifying shielding quality to minimize electromagnetic interference. Class A+ demands significantly better performance, with transfer impedance below 2.5 mΩ/m and screening attenuation exceeding 75 dB across higher MHz ranges.
  • Mechanical and Environmental Criteria
The standard defines stringent mechanical testing, including tensile strength (>45 N), flexure endurance (>50 cycles), and cable crushing resistance (>700 N minimum), to guarantee durability under typical installation and operational conditions. Climatic resilience tested to category 40/70/21 ensures reliable performance across a wide temperature range.

  • Marking and Identification
Assemblies must be marked clearly on the cable sheath indicating the IEC assembly type and screening class, e.g., “IEC 60966-2-6 – Screening class A – 2014”, supporting traceability and quality assurance.

Applications

  • Broadcast and Television Systems
Cable assemblies conforming to SIST EN 60966-2-6:2017 are integral to the infrastructure of TV and radio receivers, enabling signal distribution in residential, commercial, and broadcast environments.

  • Cable Network Installations
Used extensively in passive wideband equipment within coaxial cable networks, including cable TV (CATV), satellite TV systems, and terrestrial broadcasting.

  • Signal Integrity and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Essential in environments requiring high shielding effectiveness to prevent radio frequency disturbances and to preserve signal quality over long cable runs.

  • Quality Controlled Manufacturing
Manufacturers utilize this standard for qualification and capability approvals of cable assembly production, ensuring compliance with European and international electrotechnical requirements.

Related Standards

  • IEC 61196 Series – Defines coaxial cable specifications related to cable construction and performance.
  • IEC 61169-24 – Sectional specification for type F coaxial connectors, used extensively in TV and radio coaxial cable assembly applications.
  • IEC 60728-4 – Covers cable networks for television signals and related equipment.
  • IEC 60966-1 – Generic specification for radio frequency and coaxial cable assemblies outlining general requirements and test methods.
  • IEC 60966-2-1 & IEC 60966-2-2 – Sectional and blank detail specifications for flexible coaxial cable assemblies.
  • IEC 62153-4-7 – Electromagnetic compatibility test methods, specifically for measuring transfer impedance and screening attenuation using the triaxial method.

SIST EN 60966-2-6:2017 provides comprehensive technical requirements that ensure high-quality coaxial cable assemblies critical for reliable radio and TV receiver performance in modern telecommunications and broadcast networks. Its focus on electrical, mechanical, and EMC parameters makes it a vital reference for manufacturers, installers, and network operators seeking standardized components that satisfy rigorous performance and durability standards.
