Railway applications - Designation system for railway vehicles - Part 1: General principles

As a railway-specific technical standard, this European Standard specifies the designation system for technical products and technical project documentation.  It takes into account the general rules for structuring principles according to EN 61346-1 and designations according to EN 61355.
The European Standard specifies the structure and content of the designation sets required in the technical project documentation.
The designation depends on the aspect used, see Annex C, individually or in designation set combinations, i.e.:
-   product groups according to EN 15380-2;
-    installation site/location according to EN 15380-3;
function structure according to DIN 25002-5.

-   Produktgruppen nach EN 15380-2;
-   Aufstellungs- / Einbauort nach EN 15380-3;

- groupes de produits, selon l'EN 15380-2 ;
- position d'installation/emplacement sur le véhicule, selon l'EN 15380-3 ;
- structure fonctionnelle, selon la DIN 25002-5.

Overview

EN 15380-1:2006 (CEN) defines the general principles of a standardized designation system for railway vehicles. It specifies how to code and structure references to functions, products (and objects), locations and document types in technical project documentation for rolling stock. The standard aligns with structuring rules in EN 61346-1 and document designation rules in EN 61355, and forms Part 1 of the EN 15380 series (with Parts 2 and 3 covering product groups and installation sites/locations).

Key Topics

  • Aspects (viewpoints): function-oriented (=), product-oriented (-) and location-oriented (+) structures. Each aspect has equal status and may be used singly or combined.
  • Designation sets: defines specific sets for:
    • Function-oriented structure (functions and sub-functions)
    • Product designation (product groups and serial numbers)
    • Object designation (objects within products)
    • Installation site / Location designation
    • Document type (uses prefix sign “&” per EN 61355)
  • Structure rules: designation sets are built from classes and subclasses; each subclass can have up to three data positions (alphabetical or numerical). Only Latin uppercase letters (excluding I and O) and Arabic numerals are permitted; the classification character “.” may subdivide designation sets.
  • Prefix signs and format: prefix signs identify designation sets; rules govern ordering, omission of subclasses, and the combination/format of designations in technical documents and title blocks.
  • Examples & annexes: contains informative annexes with fleet designation examples, designation format samples for drawings/parts lists, and relationships between aspects.

Applications

EN 15380-1:2006 is designed to support practical railway engineering and documentation tasks such as:

  • Creating consistent technical documentation, drawings and parts lists
  • Writing specifications, tenders and contracts with unambiguous references
  • Product and project planning, subsystem standardization and design demarcation
  • Maintenance planning, repair specifications and reliability data acquisition
  • Allocation of equipment to functions and comparison of system solutions

Who uses it:

  • Rolling stock manufacturers, system integrators and design engineers
  • Project managers, technical authors and document controllers
  • Fleet operators, maintenance planners and asset managers
  • Procurement teams and certification/regulatory bodies

Related Standards

  • EN 15380-2 - Product groups (Part 2)
  • EN 15380-3 - Installation sites & locations (Part 3)
  • EN 61346-1 / EN 61346-2 - Structuring principles and reference designations
  • EN 61355 - Classification and designation of documents
  • EN 61082-1, ISO/IEC 8859-1, DIN 25002 series (function groups)

Using EN 15380-1:2006 ensures consistent, machine-friendly and interoperable designations across rolling stock projects, improving clarity in documentation, procurement and lifecycle management.
