OPOMBA 1: Take jeklenke so v okviru RID/ADR imenovane »majhne posode, ki vsebujejo plin (plinske kartuše)«.
OPOMBA 2: Za jeklenke s prostornino nad 120 ml glejte standard EN 12205 ali ISO 11118.

Overview

EN 16509:2014 (CEN) specifies minimum requirements for non‑refillable, small transportable steel compact cylinders with water capacities up to and including 120 ml that contain non‑toxic, non‑flammable compressed or liquefied gases. Often referred to as “gas cartridges” in RID/ADR, this European Standard covers design, materials, construction, filling, testing, inspection at manufacture and marking of compact cylinders and their closures.

Key Topics

  • Scope & applicability
    • Small, non‑refillable transportable cylinders (≤120 ml) for non‑toxic, non‑flammable gases.
    • For larger cylinders see EN 12205 or ISO 11118.
  • Materials & construction
    • Cylinder shells: low‑alloy, fully‑killed carbon steel (max C 0.55 %) or suitable stainless steels (EN 10088‑1).
    • Materials must be compatible with gas contents (see ISO 11114‑1 and ISO 11114‑2).
    • Design must account for operating temperature (manufacturer’s limits or –20 °C, whichever is lower).
  • Design & documentation
    • Fully dimensioned drawings and specifications required (material, design pressure, burst pressure, water capacity, filling ratio, neck/thread, surface protection, opening force, etc.).
    • Closures must be gastight and render the cylinder non‑refillable once opened.
  • Testing & inspection
    • Type approval by an authorized inspector; prototype tests and ongoing batch tests are mandated.
    • Test types include hydraulic/pressure tests, burst tests, ductility (gas burst, flattening), proof pressure, water capacity, gas quantity, leakage (hot water bath or alternative), mass checks and closure opening force checks.
  • Marking & documentation
    • Markings on cylinder and outer packaging per Clause 9; traceability and manufacturer identity required.
  • Regulatory interaction
    • The standard is submitted for reference into RID and ADR; regulatory requirements may take precedence.

Applications

  • Manufacturers of compact cylinders / gas cartridges for consumer products (e.g., whipped cream chargers, small gas actuators) or industrial use where refilling is not intended.
  • Component and closure designers specifying mechanical and sealing performance.
  • Filling and quality control facilities performing batch tests and leakage checks.
  • Authorized inspection bodies performing type approval and compliance audits.
  • Transporters and packaging engineers ensuring safe shipment under RID/ADR rules.

Related Standards

  • EN 12205, ISO 11118 - standards for larger non‑refillable cylinders (>120 ml).
  • ISO 11114‑1 / ISO 11114‑2 - material compatibility for cylinder and valve materials.
  • EN 10088‑1 - stainless steel specifications.

EN 16509:2014 is essential for safe design, construction, filling and testing of compact transportable gas cylinders and for ensuring conformity with European transport and safety expectations.
