Overview

EN ISO 14245:2021/A1:2025 - Gas cylinders - Specifications and testing of LPG cylinder valves - Self-closing (Amendment 1) - is a CEN-adopted amendment to ISO 14245:2021 that updates technical requirements and test methods for self-closing valves used on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders. The amendment clarifies connection standards, material and assembly compatibility, test pressures and leak criteria, mechanical tests (impact, vibration, endurance) and documentation/marking requirements. It also adds a normative reference to MIL‑STD‑810G:2008 for environmental testing considerations.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope extension and normative references: Adds MIL‑STD‑810G:2008 as a normative reference for environmental/laboratory tests.
  • Materials & adhesives: Where adhesives are used they must be proven compatible with LPG according to recognized standards (regional/national/international).
  • Valve connections: Valve inlet and outlet connections shall conform to established standards or be proprietary designs qualified to acceptable industry procedures (examples: ISO 11363‑1, ISO 15245‑1, ISO 5145, EN 15202, ISO 10692‑2, CGA V‑1).
  • Threaded joints and sealants: Anaerobic sealants may be used on internal threaded joints if proven compatible with LPG (references such as EN 751‑1 noted).
  • Assembly security: Requirements added to ensure dip tubes, sediment tubes and liquid level gauges are securely fitted to prevent disassembly (adhesive, press fit or mechanical means).
  • Test updates:
    • Revised leak tightness limits: external and internal leak rate shall not exceed 15 cm³/h of air (corrected to specified conditions) at specified pressures/temperatures.
    • Minimum test pressures and sealing element pressures updated (e.g., sealing element ≥ 30 bar, test pressure minimum 45 bar for certain tests).
    • Impact test energies clarified: valves intended to be used only with protection caps are tested at minimum 40 J; unprotected valves require impact energy = 3.6 × gross mass (kg) ±5%.
    • Strength, endurance, vibration and other functional tests revised and cross‑referenced to renumbered tables/annexes.
  • Configuration change testing: Changes to valve design or materials require additional inspections/tests per the updated tables; guidance provided for which tests to repeat.
  • Marking and documentation: Valves must be permanently and legibly marked before entering service (forging, stamping, laser etching, etc. - adhesive labels insufficient).

Practical applications

  • Use this amendment when designing, manufacturing, testing or certifying self‑closing LPG cylinder valves.
  • Helps test laboratories determine updated test pressures, leak criteria and mechanical test parameters.
  • Supports procurement and regulatory compliance by giving manufacturers and authorities a clear set of acceptance tests for valve configuration changes and optional components (e.g., excess flow valves, non‑return valves, eduction tubes).

Who should use this standard

  • LPG cylinder valve manufacturers and designers
  • Component and accessory suppliers (dip tubes, gauges, seals)
  • Test houses, conformity assessment bodies and notified bodies
  • Cylinder fabricators, LPG equipment installers and safety regulators
  • Procurement/specification writers for LPG systems

Related standards (examples referenced)

  • ISO 11363‑1, ISO 15245‑1, ISO 5145, EN 15202, ISO 10692‑2, CGA V‑1, EN 751‑1, MIL‑STD‑810G:2008

Keywords: EN ISO 14245:2021/A1:2025, LPG cylinder valves, self‑closing valve testing, valve specifications, leak tightness, impact test, valve connections, valve marking, LPG safety standards.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
