Overview

EN 3475-203:2006 is a CEN/AECMA aerospace test-method standard for measuring the dimensions of electrical conductors and cables used in aircraft. Intended to be used together with EN 3475-100 (General), this part defines the apparatus, measurement procedures and acceptance requirements for conductor diameter, insulation/jacket thickness and external diameter. Keywords: EN 3475-203, aerospace cables, cable dimensions, test methods, conductor diameter.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope

    • Specifies a method for measuring dimensions of conductors and cables for aircraft use.
    • To be applied in conjunction with EN 3475-100.
  • Required apparatus

    • Friction or dial micrometer with flat ends (≥5 mm for conductors/single cables; ≥15 mm for multiconductor cables).
    • Vernier capability to 0.01 mm.
    • Profile projector or measuring microscope for insulation/jacket profiles.
  • Conductor measurements

    • Verify number of strands and nominal strand diameter.
    • Measure straightened conductor outside diameter (OD) at a minimum of three locations ~1 m apart.
    • Each location: two micrometer readings at 90° to each other; report the average OD.
  • Insulation and jacket

    • Distinguishes wrapped vs. extruded constructions:
      • Wrapped: verify number of tapes, tape sealing/overlap and minimum outer layer thickness.
      • Extruded: measure radial thickness at thinnest and thickest points.
    • Minimum average thickness: take four successive measurements around circumference at 90° intervals, starting at the thinnest point.
  • External diameter (OD)

    • Single insulated wire/cable: measure OD in at least three locations ~1 m apart, two readings at 90° each.
    • Non-cylindrical cables: measure at least six equidistant locations, measuring at maximal overall dimension.
    • OD reported as average over insulation/jacket.
  • Acceptance criteria

    • Measured strand/count/diameter and conductor OD must conform to the applicable product standard or technical specification.
    • For extruded jackets, minimum radial thickness must be ≥70% of maximum measured thickness.
    • Average of four thickness measurements must meet product-standard minimums.

Applications and users

  • Practical for aerospace manufacturers, cable designers, quality assurance/inspection teams, test laboratories, and certification bodies involved in aircraft wiring.
  • Used during incoming inspection, production control, qualification testing and compliance verification to ensure cable geometry meets product specifications and airworthiness requirements.
  • Keywords: aircraft cable testing, insulation thickness, micrometer measurement, aerospace wiring standards.

Related standards

  • EN 3475-100 (Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 100: General) - mandatory companion document.
  • EN 3475 series (other parts) and product-specific cable standards referenced for acceptance criteria.
