Overview

SIST EN 2714-006:2009 is a European aerospace standard specifying the requirements for CO2 laser printable, single and multicore screened (braided) and jacketed electrical cables designed for general-purpose use in aircraft on-board electrical systems. These cables are engineered to operate reliably within extreme temperature ranges from -55 °C to 260 °C. The standard is issued by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and covers both material composition and construction details to ensure durability, safety, and performance in aerospace environments. It also mandates compatibility with additional marking methods such as hot stamp and ink jet printing, following the requirements of EN 3838 for cable identification.

Key Topics

  • Cable Construction and Materials
Cables under SIST EN 2714-006:2009 have 1 to 4 electrical cores made according to related aerospace standards. The cores are copper or copper alloy based, insulated, twisted if multicore, and screened with nickel-plated copper braided strands. The outer jacket consists of polyimide coated with fluorocarbon and polytetrafluoroethylene layers ensuring thermal resistance and chemical stability.

  • Operating Temperature Range
The cables are designed to function efficiently in harsh aerospace conditions between -55 °C and 260 °C, making them suitable for critical on-board electrical applications.

  • Marking and Identification
Cables are CO2 laser printable for permanent identification. Alternative marking options include hot stamp and ink jet printing, complying with aerospace marking standards to maintain traceability and clarity during service life.

  • Testing and Quality Assurance
The standard defines extensive tests compliant with EN 3475-100 series, including visual examination, electrical resistance, voltage proof, insulation resistance, thermal ageing, bend and cold bend tests, flammability, smoke density, and toxicity. Quality management systems should align with EN 9133 to ensure manufacturing consistency.

  • Dimensions and Electrical Characteristics
Detailed tables specify nominal cross-sections ranging from 0.15 mm² to 5 mm², strand diameters, resistance values, cable external diameters, and mass per unit length supporting accurate design and integration in aerospace systems.

Applications

  • On-board Aircraft Electrical Systems
These high-performance cables are used extensively within aircraft for general purpose electrical connections, including control systems, avionics, and power distribution, where reliability under temperature extremes is critical.

  • Aerospace Industry Component Standardization
EN 2714-006 standardizes cable components to facilitate interoperability, replacement, and maintenance, helping manufacturers and operators maintain compliance with aerospace safety regulations.

  • Marking and Identification Needs
The ability to mark cables permanently using CO2 laser printing ensures traceability and reduces maintenance errors in complex electrical harnesses within aircraft.
