Overview
EN 14424:2013 - Hose fittings with screwed ferrules (CEN) specifies the design, materials and dimensions for screwed-ferrule hose fittings used on rubber and thermoplastic hoses conveying flammable and non‑flammable liquids and gases. The standard covers nominal sizes DN 13 to DN 40, with maximum working pressures of 25 bar (up to DN 25) and 16 bar (DN 32 and DN 40). It defines temperature limits (general use, LPG use and low‑temperature service) and establishes requirements for resistance, marking, type testing and quality control.
Key Topics
- Scope and intended media: Fuel dispensing hoses, LPG (liquid petroleum gas) hoses, tank‑truck hoses and hoses for liquid and gaseous chemicals.
- Sizes and pressures: DN 13–DN 40; Pmax = 25 bar up to DN 25, 16 bar for DN 32/40.
- Temperature ranges: −20 °C to +65 °C (general); LPG up to −30 °C to +70 °C (up to DN 25); LT (low temperature) use down to −50 °C.
- Design and mechanical requirements: Fittings must create a frictional and positive‑locking connection, cause no dangerous notches on the hose, and be designed so the hose fails before pull‑out of the fitting under overstress.
- Materials and surface treatments: Permitted materials include unalloyed steels, various stainless steels (e.g. 1.4301, 1.4401, 1.4571), and copper‑zinc alloys (brass grades). Surface protection options (zinc, nickel, chrome, polymer coatings) and guidance on conductivity and galvanic pairing are included.
- Gaskets: Thread gaskets must be non‑asbestos and materials (PTFE, NBR, FPM, EPDM, PUR) are recommended depending on fluid compatibility.
- Dimensions and designation: Detailed dimensional tables, figures and an ordering designation example (e.g., “Ferrule fitting EN 14424 - G 20 - 1.4571”) are provided.
- Testing and QA: Type testing, sampling, mounting instructions and marking requirements are specified.
Applications
EN 14424:2013 is essential for:
- Hose and hose‑assembly manufacturers specifying hose fittings with screwed ferrules
- Fuel retail and dispensing equipment suppliers
- LPG system designers and installers
- Tank‑truck and bulk transfer equipment OEMs
- Procurement, inspection and maintenance teams ensuring compatibility with pressure/temperature and chemical resistance requirements
Using EN 14424 helps ensure safe, interoperable fittings for critical fluid transfer systems and supports traceability via marking and standardized ordering designations.
