Overview

EN IEC 60966-2-8:2022 is a detail specification in the IEC 60966 series for radio frequency and coaxial cable assemblies. It specifically covers cable assemblies intended for radio and TV receivers, using F‑Quick connectors (IEC 61169-47) and requiring quad‑shield (screening class A++) construction (per IEC 61196-6-5). The specification addresses assemblies with a nominal impedance of 75 Ω and a frequency range up to 3000 MHz.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Connector type: Type F (IEC 61169-47) - straight or right‑angled, male or female.
  • Screening: Quad‑shield screening class A++ (IEC 61196-6-5) for enhanced EMI/RFI protection.
  • Frequency & impedance: Up to 3 000 MHz, nominal 75 Ω.
  • Mechanical limits: Maximum assembly diameter < 16.6 mm; typical weight and taper sleeve requirements are specified.
  • Environmental rating: Climatic category 40/70/21.
  • Testing & qualification:
    • Qualification is performed per IEC 60966-2-1 and generic tests in IEC 60966-1.
    • EMC and screening performance tests reference IEC 62153-4-7 (transfer impedance Z and screening attenuation T / coupling attenuation a) using the triaxial tube‑in‑tube method.
    • Electrical conductor resistance tests per IEC 61196-1-101.
    • The detail spec lists applicable test groups (e.g., Ba, Eb, Eh, Ee, Mn) and indicates that once one variant is qualified, related variants may be qualified with targeted tests (e.g., reflection, insertion loss).
  • Marking & identification: Assembly sheath must be marked with IEC assembly type name, screening class, IEC standard number and manufacturer's ID (Annex A).

Applications and practical value

  • Designed for radio and TV receiver cable leads, set‑top and household distribution, and 75 Ω cable networks where high screening performance is required.
  • Ensures consistent performance up to 3 GHz for broadcast, cable TV (CATV) drop cables, and other consumer RF connections sensitive to interference.
  • Useful for manufacturers, suppliers and test laboratories to:
    • Design and produce compliant quad‑shielded F‑Quick cable assemblies.
    • Verify EMC and insertion/reflection performance for in‑home and small‑network deployments.
    • Provide documented conformity required by procurement and certification processes.

Who should use this standard

  • Cable and RF connector manufacturers, assembly houses and contract manufacturers
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing EMC/transfer‑impedance testing
  • Product engineers and procurement teams specifying receiver interconnects for consumer electronics and CATV installations

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
