Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-45:2003/A1:2008 is a key European standard specifying safety requirements for portable heating tools and similar household electrical appliances. It is part 2-45 of the broader IEC 60335 series, which addresses the safety of household and similar electrical appliances. This amendment A1, approved by CENELEC in 2008, updates the original 2002 version to enhance product safety and compliance.

The standard is vital for manufacturers, testing bodies, and regulatory authorities to ensure that portable electric heating tools-such as heat guns, soldering irons, and similar devices-are safe for consumer use and meet harmonized European safety requirements.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN 60335-2-45 covers household and similar electrical appliances used for heating by electrical means that are portable. It addresses the particular hazards associated with these devices, including electric shock, fire, and mechanical injury risks related to heating elements.

  • Safety Requirements
The standard expands general requirements from Part 1 of IEC 60335 series, adding specific provisions for electrical insulation, temperature limits, prevention of accidental contact with hot parts, and protection against mechanical and electrical hazards unique to portable heating tools.

  • User Safety Focus
Special attention is given to persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, including children, emphasizing the need for instructions and safeguards against misuse without supervision.

  • Electrical Insulation and Testing
Detailed criteria on clearances, creepage distances, and solid insulation layers are specified. For instance, natural mica insulation must have multiple layers to meet electric strength test requirements for supplementary and reinforced insulation.

  • Integration with Other Standards
The amendment clarifies that if there are no additional hazards specified beyond those in Part 1 of IEC 60335, then the general part 1 requirements apply. It also references related standards for thermal ergonomics such as ISO 13732-1 on hot surface contact assessment.

Applications

SIST EN 60335-2-45:2003/A1:2008 applies primarily to:

  • Portable electric heating tools like heat guns, infrared lamps, and soldering irons intended for household or similar use.
  • Manufacturers aiming to certify products for the European market compliant with safety legislation and market access requirements.
  • Testing laboratories conducting conformity assessments and issuing safety certifications.
  • Regulatory agencies monitoring compliance with electrical appliance safety laws.

By adhering to this standard, stakeholders ensure that portable heating tools minimize risks of burns, electric shocks, and fires, enhancing consumer protection and reliability of products on the market.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1: General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances – foundational safety principles applicable to all appliances in this family.
  • IEC 60335 series: International standards covering different types of electrical household appliances with harmonized safety requirements.
  • ISO 13732-1:2006: Ergonomics of the thermal environment – Methods for assessing human responses to hot surfaces, referenced for temperature safety considerations.
  • Other CENELEC standards on electrical safety and testing methods applicable across electrotechnical products.
