Overview
EN 60335-2-45:2002/A11:2023 is a CENELEC amendment (A11) to the European safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances - specifically the particular requirements for portable heating tools and similar appliances rated up to 250 V. Approved 2023-03-01, this amendment updates scope, construction, marking/instructions, protection against live parts, stability, noise emission and annex requirements. It applies to household environments and similar settings (shops, farms, hotels) and supplements EN 60335-1 (general appliance safety).
Key SEO terms: EN 60335-2-45:2002/A11:2023, portable heating tools safety, household electrical safety, CENELEC.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope and examples: Covers portable electric heating tools (≤250 V) such as glue guns, heat guns, soldering irons/guns, paint strippers, thermoplastic conduit-welding tools, branding tools and other listed items (NOTE Z101).
- User safety / child-use guidance: Updated marking and instructions specify age and supervision requirements for categories of appliances (e.g., some appliances suitable for children from 3 or 8 years under supervision; others prohibited for children).
- Protection against live parts: Clarifies test application - Test probe 18 is not applied for appliances intended for commercial use by trained operators.
- Stability and mechanical hazards: Modifications align test probe application with commercial-use exclusions and reinforce mechanical safety tests.
- Construction and ergonomics:
- Noise reduction must be addressed in design (reference EN ISO 11688-1).
- Handles must be clearly identified by tactile, color or visual means.
- Annex ZE (commercial use):
- Defines additional requirements for motorized appliances intended for commercial/expert use.
- Manufacturer declaration defines intended use and labelling must state: “This appliance is designed to be used in commercial areas”.
- A-weighted sound pressure level requirement: below 70 dB(A).
- Guard interlock endurance: 5 000 cycles at 5 cycles/min.
- Annex ZAA (noise measurement): Adopts/adjusts EN 62841‑1 Annex I procedures - testing on new appliances, highest speed, three consecutive measurements averaged, specified measurement intervals and mounting conditions.
Applications - Who Uses This Standard
- Manufacturers and product designers of portable heating tools for household or professional markets (ensures compliance, safe design, marking).
- Testing and certification laboratories (type testing, noise and mechanical tests).
- Regulatory bodies and conformity assessors (national implementation and enforcement).
- Safety engineers and procurement teams evaluating devices for household, commercial or light-industry use.
Related Standards
- EN 60335-1 (general requirements for household appliances)
- EN ISO 11688-1 (low-noise machinery design guidance)
- EN 62841-1 (noise test references for power tools)
- EN ISO 12100 / EN ISO 14121 series (machinery safety and risk assessment)
This amendment refines practical safety, labelling and noise requirements for portable heating tools, helping manufacturers and assessors demonstrate compliance and reduce user risk.
