Non-destructive testing - Leak testing - Criteria for method and technique selection

This European Standard describes criteria for the selection of the most suitable method and technique for the assessment of leak tightness by indication or measurement of a gas leakage. Annex A, normative, allows a comparison of standard test methods. Leak detection using hydrostatic tests, ultrasonic or electromagnetic methods is not included in this document.  This standard can be used for equipment which can be evacuated or pressurized.

Overview

EN 1779:1999/A1:2003 (CEN) is a European Standard for non-destructive testing (NDT) - leak testing, providing criteria to select the most suitable method and technique for assessing leak tightness by indication or measurement of gas leakage. The standard applies to equipment that can be evacuated or pressurized and includes a normative annex (Annex A) that allows a direct comparison of standard test methods. Note: leak detection using hydrostatic tests, ultrasonic or electromagnetic methods is explicitly excluded.

Key topics and requirements

  • Method and technique selection criteria: The standard defines how to evaluate and choose an appropriate gas-based leak test approach based on the characteristics and testing needs of the item under test.
  • Assessment by indication or measurement: Coverage includes both qualitative (indication) and quantitative (measurement) leak testing approaches using gas detection.
  • Comparative guidance (Annex A): A normative annex provides a structured way to compare different standard test methods to guide selection.
  • Scope limitations: Clear exclusions (hydrostatic, ultrasonic, electromagnetic methods) and applicability only to equipment that can be evacuated or pressurized are specified.
  • Standard context: EN 1779 is a CEN (European Committee for Standardization) document within the NDT family and is referenced for regulatory and industry best-practice decisions on gas leak testing.

Practical applications

  • Choosing the optimal gas leak testing method during design validation, production testing, repair verification or periodic inspection of pressurizable equipment.
  • Informing test planning where sensitivity, reliability and suitability of gas-based leak detection must be assessed before execution.
  • Providing a technical basis for procurement specifications, acceptance criteria and quality control procedures where gas leak tightness is critical.

Who uses this standard

  • NDT and quality engineers specifying or performing leak tests
  • Manufacturers of pressure vessels, piping, valves, HVAC systems, and components that are tested by evacuation or pressurization
  • Design engineers selecting verification methods for prototypes or production items
  • Compliance officers and third-party inspectors writing test protocols or acceptance criteria

Related standards

  • EN 1779 should be used alongside other CEN and international NDT and leak testing standards (refer to national or industry lists for specific test-method standards). Because hydrostatic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic techniques are excluded, consult dedicated standards when those methods are required.
