SIST EN 15877-1:2012/oprA1:2017
(Amendment)Railway applications - Marking on railway vehicles - Part 1: Freight wagons
Railway applications - Marking on railway vehicles - Part 1: Freight wagons
This part of the standard identifies the information required to be marked on freight wagons, or parts of freight wagons, relating to their technical and operational characteristics. It defines the characteristics of these markings, the requirements pertaining to their presentation, their shape and position on a vehicle and their meaning. Some markings are accompanied with a note(s) where appropriate.
Tank barrel manufacturers’ design criteria, test and product specification plates have not been considered in this European Standard as they are specified in EN 12561-1:2011, Railway applications - Tank wagons - Part 1: Identification plates for tank wagons for the carriage of dangerous goods.
Dangerous Goods markings have not been considered in this European Standard where fully specified in RID (dimensions, colour, location and form). Where markings are not fully specified in RID they are included in this standard.

Overview
SIST EN 15877-1:2012/oprA1:2017 is a European standard developed by CEN under the scope of railway applications, specifically focusing on the marking of freight wagons. This part 1 amendment outlines the essential requirements for technical and operational markings on railway freight wagons or their components. The standard establishes consistent guidelines concerning the types of information to be displayed, the characteristics of markings-including shape, size, and positioning-and their interpretation.
The standard excludes tank barrel manufacturers’ design and product plates, addressed separately in EN 12561-1:2011. It also excludes dangerous goods markings fully specified within RID, but covers those not comprehensively detailed there. Developed under a mandate linked to EU Directive 2008/57/EC regarding rail system interoperability, EN 15877-1/prA1 supports both safety and operational efficiency throughout European rail freight transport.
Key Topics
Required Markings Information
Identification of all necessary technical and operational data on freight wagons, ensuring clear communication for users and regulators.Marking Characteristics and Presentation
Defines minimum standards for marking visibility, font size, format, and graphical symbols to maintain uniform interpretation across the rail sector.Marking Location and Shape
Specifies standardized placement on wagon bodies and parts, with clear guidelines on shape and templates to enable rapid recognition and compliance during inspections.Adaptations and Amendments
Incorporates updates reflecting the latest technical specifications for interoperability (TSI) related to rolling stock and traffic management, including modifications to figures and key definitions for marking conventions.Conformance with EU Directives
Aligns with EU Directive 2008/57/EC essential requirements, providing a presumption of conformity within the scope of the directive and facilitating mutual recognition of freight wagon authorizations.
Applications
Freight Wagon Manufacturing
Ensuring wagons are produced with compliant markings facilitates legal operation across EU member states and supports interoperability across national rail networks.Railway Operations and Traffic Management
Clear markings enhance operational safety by providing essential technical data, such as braking system details and load status, directly on wagons for quick reference.Maintenance and Inspection
Standardized markings allow for efficient identification of wagon specifications during routine checks and repairs, reducing errors and downtime.Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Complying with EN 15877-1 ensures wagons meet EU interoperability requirements, simplifying certification and market access within the European rail freight industry.
Related Standards
EN 12561-1:2011
Specifies identification plates for tank wagons carrying dangerous goods, complementing EN 15877-1 by covering tank-specific marking requirements.RID (Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail)
Governs the mandatory dangerous goods markings, which are referenced but not duplicated in EN 15877-1.EU Directive 2008/57/EC on Rail System Interoperability
This directive outlines essential requirements for harmonization of railway subsystems, to which EN 15877-1/prA1 provides a voluntary means of conformity.Commission Regulations 321/2013 and 2015/995
Related technical specifications for interoperability covering rolling stock and operation/traffic management subsystems, integrated through annexes in EN 15877-1.
By adhering to SIST EN 15877-1:2012/oprA1:2017, manufacturers, operators, and regulators ensure a high level of clarity, safety, and interoperability within European rail freight transport, promoting standardized communication and facilitating cross-border railway operations.
