SIST EN 301 843-1:2001 is an ETSI maritime EMC standard adopted by SIST. It sets the common technical requirements for marine radio communication equipment and associated ancillary equipment, including test conditions, measurement methods, emission limits and immunity performance criteria. It was prepared as part of a harmonised Maritime EMC Radio Standard to support Article 3.1(b) of the R&TTE Directive.

What does SIST EN 301 843-1:2001 specify?

SIST EN 301 843-1:2001 specifies the shared EMC requirements for marine radio communication equipment and associated ancillary equipment. The standard is the common part of a multi-part series, and product-related parts add equipment-specific test arrangements, performance criteria and special conditions.

The document is arranged as:

  • Clause 1 Scope
  • Clause 2 References
  • Clause 3 Definitions and abbreviations
  • Clause 4 Test conditions
  • Clause 5 Performance assessment
  • Clause 6 Performance criteria
  • Clause 7 Applicability overview tables
  • Clause 8 EMC emissions
  • Clause 9 Immunity tests
  • Annex A on directive compliance clauses
AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AClauses relevant for compliance with the essential requirements of Council Directive 89/336/EEC and Directive 1999/5/EC

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 843-1:2001?

SIST EN 301 843-1:2001 defines how to test marine radio equipment for EMC, how to judge whether it passes, and which ports and operating modes are in scope. In practice, this is the document that tells a test lab what to connect, how to stimulate the equipment, and what kind of disturbance levels and pass/fail criteria to apply.

Test conditions and setup

Clause 4 requires testing under normal operating conditions, including the declared temperature, humidity, rated supply voltage and intended mode of operation. The manufacturer has to state the operating conditions, modulation, ports, cable lengths, ancillary equipment and frequency bands used in the assessment, so the test report reflects real use.

Clause 4 also sets the arrangements for wanted and unwanted test signals. This matters because transmitters and receivers have to be tested while maintaining a communication link, and the setup must prevent the immunity test signals from corrupting the measuring system itself.

How are emissions measured?

Clause 8 covers EMC emissions from the enclosure of ancillary equipment measured on a standalone basis, and conducted emissions on DC and AC power ports. The standard uses the operational mode that produces the highest emission in the band under investigation, and requires the test report to record the configuration and cable arrangement used.

For marine radio equipment used on board ships, the conducted-emission tests focus on the power ports that can carry unwanted noise back into the ship supply. The practical point is that the equipment has to stay within the emission limits while operating normally, not just in a quiet bench setup.

How are immunity tests carried out?

Clause 9 covers radiated RF field immunity, electrostatic discharge, fast transients, RF common-mode disturbance, power supply variations and surges. The tests are applied to the ports and configurations that the table in clause 7 makes applicable, so the test plan depends on whether the equipment is mobile or portable and on which ports are present.

Clause 9 also gives the test levels, frequency ranges and coupling methods. In practice, this means the equipment is stressed with the kinds of disturbances it may see on a ship, and the lab checks whether the primary function still works as intended.

How is pass or fail decided?

Clauses 5 and 6 define the performance assessment and the three performance criteria used for immunity:

  • performance criterion A for continuous phenomena
  • performance criterion B for transient phenomena
  • performance criterion C for power supply failure

The standard requires the manufacturer to declare the acceptable performance level where the equipment does not provide a continuous communication link, or where ancillary equipment is tested on a standalone basis. That matters because some equipment is judged by restored function, while other equipment must maintain live communication throughout the test.

What terms does SIST EN 301 843-1:2001 define?

  • Ancillary equipment - Equipment used with a receiver, transmitter or transceiver to add control or operating features, but not needed for the main unit to perform its basic function.
  • Artificial antenna - A non-radiating 50 ohm termination used at the antenna port during EMC testing unless an RF input signal is required.
  • Equipment Under Test (EUT) - The device or assembly being tested for EMC emissions or immunity.
  • Enclosure port - The physical boundary through which electromagnetic fields can radiate from or enter the apparatus.
  • Mobile equipment - Marine receiver, transmitter or transceiver intended for installation and use on board ships.
  • Portable equipment - Marine radio or ancillary equipment intended for handheld or similar portable use on board ships, powered by its own internal battery.
  • Spurious emission - An emission outside the necessary bandwidth whose level can be reduced without affecting the wanted transmission.
  • Radio Frequency (RF) - The frequency range used for the radio signals applied during the EMC tests.

Who uses SIST EN 301 843-1:2001?

SIST EN 301 843-1:2001 is used by manufacturers of marine radio equipment, test laboratories, conformity assessors, and compliance engineers. It is also relevant to quality managers and buyers who need evidence that marine radios and ancillary equipment have been tested against the correct EMC requirements for shipboard use.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 843-1:2001?

The standard relies on several referenced standards and directives:

  • EN 60945 - provides the marine navigation and radiocommunication test methods used for several emission and immunity procedures.
  • EN 50081-1 and EN 50082-1 - provide generic emission and immunity context for the residential, commercial and light industrial environment.
  • EN 61000-4-2, EN 61000-4-3, EN 61000-4-4, EN 61000-4-5 and EN 61000-4-6 - provide the detailed EMC test methods for ESD, radiated RF field, fast transients, surge and conducted RF immunity.
  • CISPR 16-1 - supports the measuring apparatus and methods used for radiated emissions.
  • IEC 60050-161 - supplies EMC vocabulary used in the definitions.
  • CEPT Recommendation 74-01 - is used for the definition of spurious emissions.
  • Directive 1999/5/EC and Council Directive 89/336/EEC - are the directive references linked to the harmonised compliance clauses.
  • Part 2 and Part 4 of the same ETSI series - provide product-specific requirements for maritime radiotelephone equipment and Narrow-Band Direct-Printing (NBDP) NAVTEX receivers.

What does the SIST EN 301 843-1:2001 document contain?

  • Test conditions for normal temperature, humidity, supply voltage and operating mode.
  • Test arrangements for transmitters, receivers and combined transceivers.
  • Applicability tables showing which EMC tests apply to mobile and portable equipment and to which ports.
  • Emission methods and limits for enclosure radiation and conducted emissions on AC and DC power ports.
  • Immunity methods and levels for RF field, electrostatic discharge, fast transients, RF common-mode disturbance, supply variations and surges.
  • Annex A mapping of clauses to the essential requirements in the cited directives.
