SIST EN 546-4:1998 - Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Foil - Part 4: Special property requirements - Effective Date
- 22-Dec-2008
Overview
EN 546-4:2006 - published by CEN - is the European standard that specifies special property requirements and test methods for wrought aluminium and aluminium‑alloy foil (flat‑rolled products). It covers porosity, wettability, stickiness, burst strength and Erichsen cupping as applicable to different foil product groups. The standard excludes lacquered, painted, embossed or laminated foil. Technical conditions for inspection and delivery are given in EN 546‑1.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & applicability
- Applies to flat‑rolled wrought aluminium foil (various gauge ranges are specified for different tests).
- Tests are performed only when agreed between supplier and purchaser and specified on the order.
- Porosity (pinholes and roll holes)
- Detection by examination on a light box under controlled illumination; pinholes defined for 6 µm–20 µm gauge range.
- Sampling: one full‑width sample ~1 m long from every three rolled coils; worst‑area and random selection methods described.
- Acceptance values are to be agreed between supplier and purchaser.
- Wettability
- Applies to foil gauges from 6 µm to 200 µm. Surface assessed for ability to be wetted by distilled water or water/ethanol mixtures (10% / 20%).
- Four test techniques: droplet, fine spray, liquid stream, and cotton‑wool pad (referee method).
- Wettability indices (A–G) defined by test traces; minimum acceptance agreed contractually.
- Frequency: random testing sufficient to verify process control capability.
- Stickiness
- Applies to fully annealed foil (6 µm–50 µm). Evaluated by unwind/free‑fall test; maximum acceptable unwind length is specified (2 m).
- Frequency: random testing as agreed.
- Burst strength & Erichsen cupping
- Procedures and applicability are included for consumer and container foils where relevant; acceptance criteria to be agreed.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: foil manufacturers, converters, quality control engineers, purchasing/specification teams, product designers for packaging and containers, and inspection laboratories.
- Why use it: to define agreed acceptance criteria, perform routine quality control and contract testing, and ensure consistent surface and mechanical behaviour important for packaging, forming and sealing operations.
- Product groups referenced: light gauge converter double‑rolled foil, heavy gauge converter single‑rolled foil, consumer foil, container foil - each with specific applicable tests.
