Overview
EN 2591-318:2018 is a CEN European Standard that specifies a standardized method for determining fire-resistance of elements of electrical and optical connection used in aerospace equipment. It is intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 (general test methods) and defines specimen preparation, apparatus setup, flame calibration, test sequence and pass/fail criteria for connector fire-resistance trials.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines a repeatable test method to assess whether connector assemblies resist flame exposure without hazardous electrical failure or flame-through on the non-exposed side.
- Specimen preparation and layouts: Provides required connector layouts for common connector series (references to EN 2997 and EN 3645 layouts) and instructions for backshells, strain reliefs and cable routing. Cables between clamps and grommet are exposed to flame; glass-fibre sheath or equivalent is used where cables contact clamps.
- Apparatus and fixture: Specifies mounting of mated specimens on a steel plate representative of a firewall, thermal barriers, vibration mounting and thermocouple positioning. Burner position, angle and distance are calibrated per ISO 2685.
- Flame characteristics and burner sizing: Flame shall conform to ISO 2685; burner diameter is selected relative to the connector’s projected (major) cross-section (table-based values or calculated with Mandated Body agreement).
- Test procedure (two phases):
- Phase 1: Simultaneous flame and vibration (30–60 Hz, 100 m/s²). First 5 minutes contacts carry specified nominal current (no electrical discontinuity allowed). After 5 minutes apply specified voltages for 1 minute and check leakage current limits.
- Phase 2: Continue flame exposure for further 14 minutes with no voltage applied.
- Acceptance criteria: No electrical discontinuity during initial 5 minutes; leakage current not exceeding specified value during the sixth minute; no visible flame on the rear/non-exposed side when viewed along assembly axis.
Practical applications and users
This standard is used by:
- Aerospace connector and cable manufacturers for product qualification and design verification of fire-resistant connectors.
- Avionics and aircraft OEMs to specify and validate connector performance in designated fire zones.
- Independent test laboratories performing certification and compliance testing.
- Defense and certification authorities assessing safety and airworthiness requirements.
Keywords: EN 2591-318:2018, fire-resistance test, aerospace connectors, elements of electrical and optical connection, ISO 2685, connector qualification.
Related standards

- ISO 2685 (Resistance to fire in designated fire zones)
- EN 2997, EN 3645 (connector families/layouts)
- EN 2234 (fire-resistant cable)
- EN 3660 (cable outlet accessories)
This standard ensures reproducible, safety-focused assessment of connector behavior under combined flame and mechanical stress representative of aircraft fire-zone conditions.
