Liming materials - Determination of product effect on soil pH - Soil incubation method
This document specifies two methods (method A and method B) of measuring the effect of the addition of any material claimed to have a liming effect on the soil, using the same basic principles.
Method A measures the changes to the soil pH resulting from the addition of any material claimed to have a liming effect on a standard soil, measured over a period of one month.
Method B assesses the efficiency of any material claimed to have a liming effect, using a range of defined soils and measured over a period of up to 2,5 years.
The methods are not applicable to mineral products coarser than 6,3 mm for method A or 20 mm for method B, determined according to EN 12948.
NOTE These methods allow comparison of products under controlled climatic conditions but do not replace field experiments.
Ta evropski standard določa dve metodi merjenja vpliva dodajanja materialov z domnevnim učinkom apnjenja na tla z uporabo nekaterih osnovnih načel.

Overview
EN 14984:2016 - "Liming materials - Determination of product effect on soil pH - Soil incubation method" (CEN) describes two laboratory incubation methods to measure how liming materials affect soil pH. The standard provides controlled procedures to compare the liming effect of products under reproducible climatic and soil conditions. It supersedes EN 14984:2006 and introduces the option to express results as ENVI (effective neutralizing value by incubation).
Key topics and requirements
- Two test methods (same basic principles):
- Method A: Measures pH change on a defined reference soil over one month. Intended for standardised, tightly specified soil characteristics (pH range, CEC, organic carbon, clay fraction).
- Method B: Assesses liming efficiency using a range of defined soils and longer-term incubation (up to 2.5 years) to capture slower reactions and variable soil types.
- Product size limits: Not applicable to mineral products coarser than 6.3 mm (Method A) or 20 mm (Method B), determined according to EN 12948.
- Controlled laboratory conditions: Temperature-controlled incubation, regular pH measurements, standardized sample preparation and pot/test portion procedures (see referenced apparatus and reagents).
- Results expression: pH change, efficiency metrics and optional ENVI calculation (formulas added in 2016 revision).
- Limitations: Laboratory incubation methods are comparative and reproducible but do not replace field experiments - field conditions (mixing, agglomerates, climate) can affect in-situ performance.
Practical applications and users
Who benefits from EN 14984:2016:
- Manufacturers and formulators of liming materials validating product claims (neutralizing effect, efficiency).
- Independent testing laboratories performing quality control and product comparison under standard conditions.
- Regulatory bodies and certification schemes assessing conformity and labeling claims for liming materials.
- Soil scientists, agronomists and R&D teams studying pH dynamics, organic-matter-driven effects and long-term material behavior. Practical uses:
- Comparative product benchmarking and R&D screening.
- Substantiating marketing claims about soil pH impact.
- Pre-field evaluation to supplement-but not replace-field trials.
Related standards
Relevant references commonly used alongside EN 14984:
- EN 12948 - particle size determination for mineral liming materials
- EN 12945 - neutralizing value (NV) chemical methods
- EN 13971, EN 16357 - reactivity assessments
- EN 1482 series - sampling and sample preparation
- EN 12048 - moisture determination
EN 14984:2016 is essential for standardized laboratory assessment of liming materials’ effect on soil pH, providing reproducible comparative data to guide product development, quality control and regulatory evaluation.
