Road and airfield surface characteristics - Test methods - Part 7: Irregularity measurement of pavement courses : the straightedge test
This European standard describes a standard apparatus and test methods for measuring single irregularities attributable to quality defects in the surface course(s) of new roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. It is not applicable to providing information on profile which will be the subject of a s subsequent CEN Standard. Single irregularities are by nature random, and consequently no routine sampling rates are specified (see annex A.1)

Overview
EN 13036-7:2003 - a CEN test method - defines the straightedge test for measuring single surface irregularities in pavement courses of roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. The standard covers a simple, static apparatus and procedure to identify localized deviations (quality defects) in new and in-service surface courses. It is explicitly not intended for full-profile or general longitudinal evenness assessment, and it does not prescribe routine sampling rates because single irregularities are inherently random.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Apparatus
- Straightedge: (3 000 ± 3) mm length; measurement-edge width (25 ± 1) mm. When suspended at endpoints the measurement edge plane must not deviate by more than ±0.5 mm and straightness along the length must be ≤ 1.5 mm.
- Measurement wedge: (300 ± 1) mm length; width (25 ± 1) mm. Marked in 1 mm increments for the first 10 mm and 2.5 mm increments thereafter. True height accuracy ±0.1 mm.
- Straightedge and wedge must carry the same unique reference and be calibrated (annually) with an accompanying certificate.
- Measurement procedure
- Clear surface of detritus. Place straightedge perpendicular to the surface; orient parallel to centre line for longitudinal checks or perpendicular for transverse checks (diagonal/other directions permitted).
- Insert wedge into the gap to refusal and read the distance between the straightedge edge and the pavement surface. Measure between two contact points and from both sides where practical.
- Record measurements to the nearest 1 mm and report the greatest irregularity found.
- Reporting
- Test report must include: reference to EN 13036-7:2003, test date, straightedge/wedge IDs, location (road/chainage), measurement type (longitudinal/transverse/diagonal), whether surface was trafficked, and responsible signature.
- Limitations
- Not a profilometric method; does not give continuous profile indices. Annex A clarifies field of application and calibration; Annex B lists country deviations.
Applications and users
- Practical use:
- Acceptance testing of newly constructed surface courses
- Quality control and on-site verification of surface defects that affect drainage, vehicle handling and comfort
- Localized rut-depth checks when used transversely (note: detailed rut standards are separate)
- Typical users:
- Highway and airport authorities, pavement contractors, site QA/QC engineers, pavement materials laboratories and consultants conducting conformance testing.
Related standards
- EN 13036 series (relevant parts): EN 13036‑1, EN 13036‑2, EN 13036‑3, EN 13036‑4 and the profilometric/longitudinal evenness work items cited in the standard.
- National and international references cited (e.g., ASTM E1703 and various national methods) are helpful complements when mechanised or profilometric methods are required.
