Materials for printed boards and other interconnecting structures -- Part 2-26: Reinforced base materials, clad and unclad - Non-halogenated epoxide non-woven/woven E-glass reinforced laminated sheets of defined flammability (vertical burning test), copper-clad
This part of EN 61249 gives requirements for properties of non-halogenated epoxide non-woven/woven reinforced E-glass laminated sheets of defined flammability (vertical burning test), copper-clad in thicknesses of 0,80 mm up to 1,60 mm. The flammability rating is achieved through the use of non-halogenated inorganic and/or organic compounds acting as fire retardants. These fire retardants are contained as part of polymeric structure or in addition to it. The glass transition temperature is defined to be 95 °C minimum.

Overview
EN 61249-2-26:2005 specifies requirements for non‑halogenated epoxide, non‑woven/woven E‑glass reinforced laminated sheets that are copper‑clad and have a defined flammability rating (vertical burning test). This European adoption of IEC 61249‑2‑26 covers copper‑clad laminate thicknesses 0.80 mm to 1.60 mm, with a minimum glass transition temperature (Tg) of 95 °C. Flammability performance is achieved using non‑halogenated inorganic and/or organic flame retardants either as part of the polymer matrix or added to it.
Key topics and requirements
- Material system: Non‑halogenated epoxy resin systems combined with non‑woven and/or woven E‑glass reinforcement.
- Cladding: Copper‑clad laminates intended for printed boards and other interconnecting structures.
- Thickness range: Nominal copper‑clad laminate thicknesses from 0.80 mm to 1.60 mm.
- Thermal performance: Minimum Tg = 95 °C and defined cure factor requirements.
- Flammability: Defined vertical burning test rating using non‑halogenated flame retardants.
- Electrical and non‑electrical properties: Includes specified electrical characteristics, appearance, laminate thickness tolerances, bow and twist, copper foil bond (peel/pull‑off), punching/machining behavior, dimensional stability, water absorption and measing.
- Quality assurance: Requirements for inspection responsibility, qualification and conformance testing, certificates of conformance, packaging and marking, and ordering information.
Applications and users
This standard is relevant for professionals and organizations involved in the design, manufacture and procurement of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and interconnect structures:
- PCB material manufacturers and laminators specifying copper‑clad laminates.
- PCB fabricators and assemblers selecting base materials for multilayer or single‑layer boards.
- Product designers and electrical engineers who require specified flame retardancy and thermal performance (Tg) for electronic assemblies.
- Compliance engineers and testing laboratories performing material qualification, flammability and electrical tests.
- Procurement teams and quality managers requiring documented conformance and traceable specifications.
Practical value
- Ensures predictable mechanical, thermal, electrical, and flammability behavior for critical PCB applications.
- Promotes safer, non‑halogenated material choices for environmentally sensitive or regulatory-driven designs.
- Provides a clear basis for supplier qualification, incoming inspection and acceptance criteria.
