Overview
prEN 15767-3 (2025) - draft CEN standard - covers portable monitors specifically for foam devices used in firefighting. Building on EN 15767-1 (general requirements for portable monitor assemblies), this part applies to devices that aspirate air and project low‑expansion foam, and in some cases induct foam concentrate. It defines safety, performance, classification, designation, test methods, instructions for use and maintenance, and marking for foam nozzles, foam tubes, self‑inducting nozzles and foam attachments.
Key attributes in the draft:
- Applies to devices designed for projecting low‑expansion foam (expansion < 20)
- Tests and comparisons are performed with water at a reference pressure of 6 bar
- Supersedes EN 15767‑3:2010 when adopted
Key topics and technical requirements
- Device types & definitions: foam nozzle, foam tube, self‑inducting nozzle, foam attachment, inducting systems, metering devices, pick‑up tube.
- Mechanical limits:
- Maximum mass limits by flowrate category (e.g., <2000, 2000–4000, >4000 l/min) - see standard table.
- Maximum operating torques for levers, valve handles and rotating elements.
- Rotational detent forces between 15 N and 75 N after endurance cycling.
- Hydraulic performance:
- Flowrates verified at reference pressure (6 bar) with tolerance –0 / +10%.
- Effective throw requirements for flow positions >500 l/min; measurement method specified (inclination 30° ±2°, wind ≤2 m/s).
- Spray angle for self‑inducting nozzles ≥ 100°.
- Nominal pressure reference: 16 bar for certain verifications.
- Environmental durability:
- Heat test: stored 24 h at (55 ±2) °C and remain operable.
- Frost test: drained and stored at (‑15 ±2) °C and operating elements still movable.
- Ergonomics & information:
- Foam nozzles must be operable while wearing EN 659 firefighter gloves.
- Instruction and maintenance handbook required; must include design data, marking, and maximum foam concentrate viscosity.
- Datasheet and acceptance tests on delivery are specified (Annexes B and A).
