Feather and down - Test methods - Determination of the filling power (massic volume)
This European Standard specifies one procedure for determining the fill power (massic volume). This method is applicable to processed plumage fit for or constituting filled manufactured articles (e.g. anoraks, quilts, etc.).
Perje in puh - Preskusne metode - Ugotavljanje polnilne moči (masni volumen)

Overview
EN 12130:2018 - Feather and down - Test methods - Determination of the fill power (massic volume) is a CEN European Standard that defines a single validated procedure for measuring the fill power (massic volume) of processed feather and down used in filled manufactured articles (e.g., anoraks, quilts, sleeping bags). The method produces a reproducible height (mm) reading which is converted to massic volume (cm3/g or in3/30 g) and applies to finished plumage that has undergone normal processing (washing, drying, hygienic treatment).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applicable to processed plumage fit for filled products; supersedes EN 12130:1998.
- Principle: A fixed mass of filling material is placed in a calibrated cylinder, loosened, and compressed by a platen; the platen height is measured to calculate massic volume.
- Conditioning methods (three options):
- Method A - Steam conditioning: steam treatment, hot-air drying and 48 h conditioning in a standard atmosphere.
- Method B - Tumble dry: 30 min tumble dry at 60 °C, then 48 h conditioning.
- Method C - Box conditioning: high‑flow air blown into a closed cylinder followed by 48 h conditioning.
- Apparatus & tolerances (examples specified):
- Cylinder: internal diameter (289 ± 1) mm, height (500 ± 5) mm.
- Weight plate + rod mass: (94.25 ± 1.20) g; plate diameter ≈ 286 mm with 128 holes Ø 3 mm.
- Applied pressure on filling: (14.8 ± 0.2) Pa.
- Manual loosening (wooden rods) or automatic loosening (blower and timed movement).
- Procedure: Duplicate samples, multiple readings per sample (manual: 6 measurements total; automatic: 4), measured under standard atmosphere (EN ISO 139).
- Calculations & precision:
- Fill power (mm) → massic volume: Fill Power (mm) × 2.20 = cm3/g.
- Alternate conversion to in3/30 g: Fill Power (mm) / 0.252.
- Allowed testing variance: ±5%.
- Test report must record conditioning method, specimen mass, fill power (mm), massic volume, deviations, and reference to EN 12130:2018.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers and quality control of down-filled clothing, bedding and outdoor equipment (jackets, quilts, sleeping bags).
- Independent testing laboratories and product certification bodies verifying fill performance claims.
- Product developers and material specifiers choosing down grades based on loft/insulation performance.
- Regulatory and procurement teams requiring standardized test evidence for product specifications.
