Overview
EN 1883:2018 - "Feather and down - Sampling in view of tests" (CEN) defines a standardized method to obtain a representative laboratory bulk sample from lots of feather and down, from feather/down inside manufactured products, or from the finished manufactured product itself. The standard updates and supersedes EN 1883:1998 and is intended for use by laboratories, manufacturers and quality inspectors across Europe. It also references conditioning requirements (EN ISO 139) to ensure test specimens are taken from properly conditioned material.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: clear definitions for lot, container, package, package sample, individual sample, laboratory bulk sample and test specimen.
- Sampling principle: random selection of packages from a lot; withdrawal of three individual samples from each selected package; combination into a laboratory bulk sample used to produce test specimens.
- Sample reduction (quartering): mixing the laboratory bulk sample in a suitable container, spreading in a square box (≈50 × 50 × 15 cm), dividing with a wooden cross, and selecting opposite quarters repeatedly until the required mass remains.
- Quantities and tables: Annex A (normative) provides sampling tables for:
- packages filled with more than 500 g (Table A.1), and
- packages up to 500 g and manufactured articles (Table A.2). These tables specify the number of packages to sample and the mass of each of the three individual samples to be taken per package (with entries ranging from single-package cases to lots of over 1 200 units).
- Special cases: whole filling can constitute the laboratory bulk sample for very small packages (e.g., single packages under certain limits - see Annex A.3).
- Conditioning and environmental control: samples must be conditioned and temperature/relative humidity measured in accordance with EN ISO 139 before preparing test specimens.
- Test report requirements: the report must reference EN 1883 and include sampling date/place, lot ID, buyer/seller, lot size and condition, number and mass of drawn units, total laboratory sample mass and any deviations from procedure.
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing of raw feather and down lots.
- Incoming inspection for bedding, pillows, duvets, sleeping bags and down-filled apparel.
- Preparation of representative samples for laboratory tests such as composition, filling power, contaminants or hygiene analyses.
- Dispute resolution between buyers and suppliers by providing a documented, reproducible sampling record.
Who uses this standard
- Textile and bedding manufacturers
- Down and feather suppliers and processors
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
- Purchasing and quality assurance teams in retail and production
- Regulatory and inspection authorities overseeing product conformity
