Electric motor-operated tools - Dust measurement procedure - Part 2-3: Particular requirements for concrete grinders and disk-type sanders

This European Standard specifies general requirements for the dust measurement of electric motor-operated tools supplied from mains or from batteries. This European Standard applies to those tools with and without dust extraction unit where dust such as mineral dust containing silica or wood dust is expected.
This part of EN 50632 sets particular requirements for concrete grinders and disk-type sanders.

Overview

EN 50632-2-3:2016/A1:2021 is a CENELEC amendment that specifies particular requirements for the dust measurement procedure of concrete grinders and disk-type sanders. It is part of the EN 50632 series for electric motor‑operated tools and is to be used in conjunction with EN 50632-1:2015. The standard addresses dust measurement for tools supplied from mains or batteries, with or without dust extraction units, where mineral dust containing silica or wood dust is expected.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to concrete grinders and disc-type sanders when measuring airborne and collected dust from grinding/sanding operations.
  • Test materials and setups:
    • Concrete grinders: use concrete slabs (min. 400 × 400 mm, max. 600 × 600 mm, thickness 50 ± 5 mm) stored ≥3 weeks; slabs arranged on an A‑support with 15° inclination to form ≈2.0 m × 1.2 m test area (per EN 1339:2003).
    • Disc‑type sanders (gypsum): use high‑density gypsum blocks (100% CaSO4·2H2O, density ≥1250 kg/m³, hardness ≥80 Shore C) stored ≥2 weeks; arranged on A‑support to form ≈4 m × 1.5 m test area (per EN 12859:2011).
    • Disc‑type sanders (wood): use beech wood panels (500 × 500 mm), initial moisture ≤12%.
  • Tool and consumable requirements:
    • Concrete grinding wheel: new or re‑sharpened diamond wheel as manufacturer specifies.
    • Sanding paper: grain P80 for gypsum and wood; replaced after each test cycle.
    • Speed settings: typically set to manufacturer’s grinding/sanding setting or maximum speed for sanding tests.
  • Operating conditions:
    • Orientation: tool surface parallel to workpiece; operate at least 50 mm from test-piece edges.
    • Feed force: sufficient for stable operation; for sanding wood: 30 N ±5 N if tool mass <1.5 kg, otherwise 50 N ±5 N.
  • Dust collection metrics:
    • Minimum material to be collected in dust extraction unit during testing: e.g., 1 200 g for concrete grinders; for disc sanders: 1 500 g (≤150 mm) or 2 000 g (>150 mm). Weight determined by scale increase of extractor.

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers of concrete grinders and disk‑type sanders for product design, performance verification and CE marking support.
  • Independent test laboratories performing dust emission and extraction efficacy testing.
  • Occupational safety professionals, tool procurement teams and regulatory bodies assessing silica and wood dust exposure risks.
  • R&D teams developing dust extraction systems and accessory consumables (wheels, sanding papers).
