European foreword
This document (FprEN 18080:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 129 “Glass in
building”, the secretariat of which is held by NBN.
This document is currently submitted to the Formal Vote.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CEN by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
Member States.
Introduction
The large number of glass products for use in buildings, especially laminated glasses and insulating glass
units, makes it impossible to test all products individually with respect to their reaction to fire
performance. Therefore, in many cases the reaction to fire performance of glass products demands
extended application instructions for application.
CEN/TS 15117:2005, Guidance on direct and extended application establishes the use of additional
calculations together with an initial test result as a possibility for extended application.
Consequently, the rules given in this document are based on calculations considering the QPCS (gross heat
combustion) values of the glass products and their components.
In addition, since the experience has been made that an early termination of a single burning item (SBI)
test according to EN 13823 cannot always be prevented using a burner guard grid as described in
EN 13823, an alternative metal grid is proposed to ensure a valid test result for classification.
1 Scope
This document gives precisions on the mounting and fixing rules for testing glass products and provides
guidance. It defines procedures for extended application of test results obtained in accordance with EN
ISO 1716, EN ISO 11925-2, EN ISO 1182 and EN 13823 and classified according to EN 13501-1.
The extended application rules in this document are not applicable to laminated glass comprising plastic
glazing sheet material.
This document is not applicable to joints and cables, junction boxes, glues, mounting seals and any fixing
devices used to install the glass product.

4 Specific instructions for the reaction to fire classification of glass products
4.1 General
Testing of organic components of glass products shall follow EN ISO 1716, EN ISO 1182 and/or
EN ISO 11925-2 without deviations.
However, due to the specific properties of glass products, there is a need to adapt the mounting and fixing
of glass products in the test according to EN 13823:2020+A1:2022, SBI test.
NOTE Some glass products are classified A1 according to 96/603/EC: Commission Decision.
4.2 Mounting and fixing instructions for SBI test according to EN 13823
Information about the samples and their mounting conditions are given in EN 13823:2020+A1:2022,
Clause 5 and are completed for glass products by the following considerations:
The dimensions of the specimens shall be according to EN 13823:2020+A1:2022, 5.1.1, i.e. not
subdivided. Therefore EN 13823:2020+A1:2022, 5.2.2 e) is not applicable to glass products.
The two wings of the test specimen are arranged on the trolley according to EN 13823:2020+A1:2022,
Figure 2. On the backside there will be arranged a support frame made from metal profiles. The function
of this support frame is just to hold the glass against the lower U-profile and the upper stop for preventing
the glass panes to fall over. These mounting conditions are only applicable for glass products when the
purpose is to determine the reaction to fire performance of the glass product alone. For the assessment
of glass products which are fixed by gluing or taping in the end-use application, further provisions for the
mounting conditions and the execution of tests are needed. This case is therefore not covered by this
document.
For glass products not supposed to be installed in the vicinity of a wall (e.g. see-through glazing), the
distance of the backside of the glass panes to the backing board should be according to
EN 13823:2020+A1:2022, 5.2.2 as a free-standing product.
For glass products that can be installed in the close vicinity or against a wall (e.g. mirrors, painted glass…),
the distance of the backside of the glass panes to the substrate is between 5 mm and 10 mm. The
mounting should be according to EN 13823:2020+A1:2022, 5.2.2 as a free-standing product. A non-
combustible substrate material should be used to test the generic performance. The burner guard as
described in EN 13823:2020+A1:2022, Clause 4.4.6 f) shall always be used when testing glass products.
When a previous test has shown that this device will not be sufficient to protect the burner, it shall be
replaced by a metal grid with a mesh size of 15 cm x 15 cm and a wire diameter of 6 mm, placed in front
of the glazing on at least 80 % of the glass surface, see Figure 1. The metal grid should always be used
when monolithic glass with applied organic layer is tested.
