Overview
SIST EN ISO 377:2017/A1:2025 is an important amendment to the international standard governing the location and preparation of samples and test pieces for mechanical testing of steel and steel products. Published by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) in August 2025, this document updates the original EN ISO 377:2017 to refine guidelines ensuring the reliability and consistency of mechanical testing results across European and international steel industries.
This standard applies to the mechanical testing of steels, establishing unified procedures for selecting sample locations and preparing specimens for tests like tensile strength, impact resistance, and other mechanical characterizations. The amendment ensures alignment with current technological practices and advances in steel production and testing.
Key Topics
Sample Location Guidelines
The amendment clarifies precise locations on steel products where test samples should be taken. It covers multiple steel section types such as T-shaped, H-sections, and flanges, aiming to minimize variability and improve repeatability in test results.Preparation Procedures
Detailed methods for preparing test pieces, including cutting, shaping, and dimensions, are outlined to avoid defects or inconsistencies that may affect mechanical properties.Mechanical Test Types
The standard supports various mechanical tests, including tensile testing and impact testing, by standardizing specimen preparation to provide accurate, comparable data for materials evaluation and quality control.European Harmonization
SIST EN ISO 377:2017/A1:2025 must be adopted by all CEN member countries, ensuring a uniform approach and facilitating trade and certification within the EU and affiliated nations.Patent Considerations
The amendment recognizes potential patent rights relevant to implementation and advises users to consult the ISO patent database as necessary.
Applications
This standard is essential for:
Steel Manufacturers and Suppliers
To follow consistent sampling and specimen preparation methods ensuring product quality meets mechanical performance requirements.Testing Laboratories
Providing accredited labs with precise procedures to generate reliable and reproducible test outcomes for certification and compliance.Construction and Engineering
Assisting builders and engineers in verifying steel product suitability for structural applications through standardized mechanical testing.Research and Development
Supporting metallurgists and materials scientists in developing new steel grades and verifying properties with accurate mechanical tests.Quality Control and Assurance
Enabling systematic sampling and testing protocols embedded in quality management systems for steel production.
