kSIST FprEN 18268:2026 is a SIST draft European standard for citric acid used as an antiscalant for membranes in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. It specifies the product description, purity criteria, analytical methods, labelling, transport, storage and safety information for manufacturers, suppliers, laboratories and water-treatment users.
What does kSIST FprEN 18268:2026 specify?
kSIST FprEN 18268:2026 applies to citric acid used as an antiscalant for membranes in drinking-water treatment. It covers the product characteristics, the required purity and the analytical methods used to verify them, and it also gives guidance on handling and use.
The document is organized into clauses 1 to 7, with two annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | General information on citric acid, including origin, manufacture, use and application |
| Annex B | General rules relating to safety, including handling and emergency actions |
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 18268:2026?
Product identification and purity
Clause 4 identifies citric acid by its chemical name, common names, commercial forms, and key physical properties. For practice, this helps buyers and laboratories confirm that they are dealing with the correct material, whether it is anhydrous solid, monohydrate or an aqueous solution.
Clause 5.2 sets the minimum citric acid content for the different commercial forms on a dry-mass basis. That matters because acceptance checks must be made against the active citric acid content, not just the gross product weight.
Clause 5.3 and Table 1 set impurity limits for sulfate, fluoride and oxalates, and the product shall not contain anti-caking agents. This gives purchasers a clear quality screen and tells suppliers which by-products must be controlled.
Clause 5.4 and Table 2 set limits for trace chemical parameters such as Sb, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Ni and Se. These limits matter because the product is used in treatment of water intended for human consumption, so trace contamination has to be controlled at source and by testing.
Sampling and analytical control
Clause 6.1 requires representative sampling from fresh manufacture or from a newly opened package, with clear sample identification and retained reference samples. In practice, this supports traceability if a batch is later questioned.
Clause 6.2 links the specification to named test methods and requires analytical-grade reagents and EN ISO 3696 water. The standard also explains how to convert elemental test results to the content in the dry product, so laboratories report results in the same form as the limits.
Delivery, marking, storage and safety
Clause 7 covers delivery forms, labelling, transport and storage. It allows bulk, containers, plastic drums, bags and big bags, and it requires delivery equipment that does not contaminate the product.
The labelling section uses EU hazard classification for serious eye irritation and the GHS07 pictogram with the signal word Warning. It also states that citric acid is not classified as dangerous goods for transport under RID, ADR, IMDG or IATA, which simplifies logistics.
Storage guidance is specific: plastics or stainless steel are suitable materials, and the product should be kept under controlled conditions to protect quality. Annex B adds first aid, spill response and fire guidance for site use.
What terms does kSIST FprEN 18268:2026 define?
- Citric Acid Anhydrous - the water-free form of citric acid used in the specification.
- Citric Acid Monohydrate - the solid form that contains one molecule of water of crystallization.
- Active matter - the citric acid content counted as free acid when concentrations are stated or calculated.
- Dry mass basis - a way of reporting content after removing water, so results can be compared fairly.
- Antiscalant - a treatment chemical used to limit scale deposition on membranes.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) - the membrane process highlighted as a main use area for the product.
- Clean in Place (CIP) - the offline cleaning arrangement where citric acid may be dosed.
- GHS07 - the hazard pictogram used with the Warning signal word for eye irritation.
Who uses kSIST FprEN 18268:2026?
Chemical producers and suppliers use this standard to control product form, purity, packaging and marking. Water-treatment operators and membrane-cleaning contractors use it when selecting and handling citric acid for offline cleaning and antiscaling, especially in RO systems.
Quality control laboratories use it for sampling and analysis, and buyers use it to set purchase specifications and check batch acceptance. National authorities may also use its product and safety information when assessing treatment chemicals for drinking-water applications.
Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 18268:2026?
- EN ISO 3696 - provides the laboratory water quality used for the analytical work.
- ISO 3165, ISO 6206 and ISO 8213 - support safe sampling, sampling vocabulary and sampling techniques for chemical products.
- ISO 2997 and ISO 3360 - are used for determining sulfate and fluoride.
- EN 1233, EN ISO 5961, EN ISO 11969, EN ISO 11885, EN ISO 12846, ISO 8288:1986 and ISO/TS 17379-2 - provide the methods used for the trace elements listed in Table 2.
What does the kSIST FprEN 18268:2026 document contain?
The document contains identification data, commercial forms, physical properties and chemical properties for citric acid. It includes Table 1 for impurities, Table 2 for chemical parameters, and Figure 1 for the chemical formula.
It also gives sampling procedures for solids and liquids, analytical methods for sulfate, fluoride, oxalate and trace elements, and an equation for reporting elemental content in the dry product. The last clause covers labelling, transportation, marking and storage, while Annex A and Annex B provide background information and safety rules.
