kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 is a CENELEC draft European standard for the safety of portable electric immersion heaters. It specifies particular safety requirements for household and similar purposes, for appliances with a rated voltage of not more than 250 V. In practice, it is the document manufacturers, test labs, and buyers use to check whether a portable immersion heater is built, marked, and tested for this product group.

What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 specifies safety requirements for portable electric immersion heaters used in household and similar applications. The scope also covers appliances used by laymen in shops, light industry, and farms when they can present a danger to the public.

The document is organized as a Part 2 standard with Clauses 1 to 32, followed by annexes and a bibliography. The annexes of Part 1 apply, and the document is read together with prEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026/prAA:2026.

The scope excludes several other appliance types and use cases, including industrial-only equipment, special-atmosphere locations, heating elements in portable liquid-heating appliances, aquarium heaters, fixed immersion heaters, and battery-operated appliances.

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 mainly adapts the general safety rules of IEC 60335-1 to portable immersion heaters. The most important points concern immersion depth, ingress protection, marking and instructions, heating tests, abnormal operation, mechanical strength, and construction.

Immersion and protection

Clause 3.1.9 defines replacement as operation of the appliance in a vessel filled with water to the minimum depth of immersion. Clause 6.2 requires immersion heaters to be at least IPX7. In practice, this means the heater must be suitable for use in liquid and the chosen enclosure protection matters in product design and testing.

Marking and instructions

Clause 7.1 requires appliances other than those intended to float to be marked with the maximum and minimum depths of immersion, and those depths may be shown by lines only. Clause 7.12 requires instructions to cover the suitable vessel, unplugging before removal from the liquid, the hot heating element after unplugging, and the fact that the appliance is not intended to be operated by an external timer or separate remote-control system. For a buyer or quality manager, this is the information that must appear on the product and in the user literature.

Heating and abnormal operation

Clause 11.7 gives the heating test conditions, including operation for 15 min after the water reaches 95 °C, or after temperature stabilizes, or after thermal control operates. Clause 19 adds special tests for appliances that prevent freezing in animal troughs and appliances that maintain a liquid at a set temperature, and it sets the test position and permitted temperature rise in the test corner. This is the core of the thermal safety evaluation.

Mechanical and construction requirements

Clause 21.1 requires a drop test from 1 m onto a hardwood board, with impacts on the handle, the heating element end, and from a horizontal position. Clause 24.101 requires thermal cut-outs used to meet Clause 19 to be non-self-resetting. Clause 25.5 forbids type X attachments and allows type Z attachment. In practice, these clauses govern robustness, safety component choice, and the supply connection design.

Heat and fire resistance

Clause 30.2 applies different subclauses depending on whether the appliance is intended to prevent freezing in animal troughs or maintain a liquid at a set temperature. For other appliances, a different subclause applies, with special mention of remote-operation cases and parts connected to the mains during charging. This affects materials selection and fire-safety verification.

What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 define?

  • Replacement - Clause 3.1.9 uses this term for operation of the appliance in a water-filled vessel at the minimum immersion depth.
  • IPX7 - Clause 6.2 names this as the minimum ingress-protection level for immersion heaters.
  • Part 1 - The document uses this term for IEC 60335-1, the general safety standard that this Part 2 modifies.
  • thermal cut-out - Clause 24.101 refers to this as a safety component used to meet Clause 19, and it shall not be self-resetting.
  • type X attachment - Clause 25.5 says this attachment type is not permitted for these appliances.
  • type Z attachment - Clause 25.5 allows this attachment type for these appliances.

Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 is used by appliance designers, compliance engineers, test laboratories, certification bodies, and quality managers working on portable immersion heaters. It is also relevant to buyers and specifiers who need to compare products for household use or for use in shops, light industry, or farms.

In practice, they use it to set product requirements, write test plans, check markings and instructions, and verify mechanical, thermal, moisture, and construction safety features.

What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 from the previous edition?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 supersedes EN 60335-2-74:2003 and its amendments and corrigenda. The underlying IEC edition replaces the second edition and its amendments.

The significant technical changes stated in the document are:

  • alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020
  • conversion of some notes into normative text in Clause 1 and 7.1
  • added requirements for appliances that maintain a liquid at a set temperature in 19.1 and 30.2

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 is used with IEC 60335-1, which provides the general safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances. It is also read with prEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026/prAA:2026.

The bibliography names related standards that help define boundaries between product types:

  • IEC 60335-2-15 - appliances for heating liquids
  • IEC 60335-2-55 - electrical appliances for aquariums and garden ponds
  • IEC 60335-2-73 - fixed immersion heaters

What does the kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 document contain?

The document contains clauses covering scope, definitions, classification, marking, protection against live parts, heating, moisture resistance, abnormal operation, mechanical strength, construction, wiring, components, clearances, fire resistance, and rusting. It also contains the Part 1 annexes, which are applicable to this part.

The foreword explains the document structure and numbering rules, including additional subclauses, tables, and figures starting at 101, and additional annexes designated AA, BB, and so on. It also states that the standard includes requirements, test specifications, and notes with different print styles.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
