Gas cylinders - Precautionary labels (ISO 7225:2005/Amd 1:2012)

This International Standard specifies the design, content (i.e. hazard symbols and text) and application of precautionary labels intended for use on individual gas cylinders containing single gases or gas mixtures. Labels for cylinders of bundles and labels for bundles are not covered by this International Standard.

Gasflaschen - Gefahrgutaufkleber (ISO 7225:2005/Amd 1:2012)

Bouteilles à gaz - Étiquettes informatives (ISO 7225:2005/Amd 1:2012)

Plinske jeklenke - Nalepke o nevarnosti - Dopolnilo A1 (ISO 7225:2005/Amd 1:2012)

Overview

SIST EN ISO 7225:2007/A1:2012 is a European and International Standard focused on gas cylinders precautionary labels. This amendment to ISO 7225:2005 provides updated guidance on the design and application of labels that communicate essential safety information regarding the hazards of gases contained within transportable gas cylinders. Developed jointly by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 58 and CEN/TC 23, this standard ensures uniformity and clarity of precautionary labeling critical for safe handling, transport, and storage of gas cylinders across numerous industries.

The standard aligns with international safety requirements to minimize risks associated with hazardous gases, emphasizing clear hazard communication and standardization of label content and presentation.

Key Topics

  • Label Content Specifications
SIST EN ISO 7225:2007/A1:2012 defines the required information on precautionary labels including gas identity, hazard symbols, and safety warnings to ensure quick and unambiguous recognition of potential dangers.

  • Affixing New Labels
This amendment permits affixing new labels over existing ones when the gas and grade remain the same (e.g., industrial, medical, food gases). For gas mixtures containing identical components and hazard classifications, relabeling is allowed only if the component concentrations match exactly for medical gases.

  • Label Uniformity and Visibility
The standard mandates consistent label design to promote global harmonization and enhance readability. Proper placement and durability of labels on cylinders ensure visibility throughout the gas lifecycle.

  • Safety and Compliance
It facilitates compliance with transport regulations and occupational safety protocols by providing standardized hazard communication essential for emergency response and handling procedures.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 7225:2007/A1:2012 applies to manufacturers, suppliers, transporters, and end-users of pressurized gas cylinders across various sectors such as:

  • Industrial Gases
Including welding gases, oxygen, and industrial mixtures where precise hazard labeling prevents accidental exposure and facilitates safe usage.

  • Medical Gas Cylinders
Ensuring clear identification of life-supporting and anesthetic gases to reduce medical errors and maintain patient safety through accurate labeling of medical-grade gases.

  • Food and Beverage Industry
For carbon dioxide and other gases used in food processing and packaging, the standard supports hygiene and safety by enforcing proper labeling protocols.

  • Chemical and Hazardous Materials Transport
Assists logistics companies and regulatory bodies in meeting transportation safety requirements for hazardous gas consignments.

Related Standards

  • ISO 11120: Transportable Gas Cylinders - Refillable Seamless Steel Gas Cylinders - Complements labeling requirements by specifying cylinder construction and testing methods.
  • ISO 11625: Cylinders for Gas Mixtures - Addresses safety-related requirements for gas cylinder mixtures, relevant in conjunction with labeling standards.
  • ADR (European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) - Aligns with EN ISO 7225 for marking and labeling hazardous gases in transport.
  • ISO 3864: Graphical Symbols - Safety Colours and Safety Signs - Provides guidance on hazard symbols used on gas cylinder labels for standardized visual communication.
