Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-13: Particular requirements for deep fat fryers, frying pans and similar appliances

This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following. This International Standard deals with the safety of electric deep fat fryers having a recommended maximum quantity of oil not exceeding 5 l, frying pans, woks and other appliances in which oil is used for cooking, and intended for household use and similar use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. Appliances intended for normal household and similar use and that may also be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms are within the scope of this standard. However, if the appliance is intended to be used professionally to process food for commercial consumption, the appliance is not considered to be for household and similar use only. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account - persons (including children) whose - physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or - lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction; - children playing with the appliance.

Overview

EN 60335-2-13:2010/A11:2012 is a CENELEC amendment that updates the European safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances specifically used for frying: deep fat fryers (recommended maximum oil quantity ≤ 5 L), frying pans, woks and similar oil‑based cooking appliances. It modifies clauses of EN 60335-2-13:2010 and EN 60335-1:2012 and aligns the product requirements with Low Voltage Directive (LVD 2006/95/EC) principles. The amendment was approved in July 2012 and applies to appliances intended for household and similar environments at rated voltages up to 250 V.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and exclusions
    • Covers household-use deep fat fryers, frying pans, woks and similar oil cooking appliances (≤ 5 L oil, ≤ 250 V).
    • Excludes commercial fryers (see EN 60335-2-37), commercial multi-purpose cooking pans (EN 60335-2-39), and appliances for special atmospheres or vehicles unless additional requirements apply.
  • Marking and instructions
    • Appliances must be marked with “CAUTION: Hot surface” and/or symbol IEC 60417-5041 on the hottest surface visible during normal operation.
    • Minimum heights: symbol ≥ 8 mm; warning text capital letters ≥ 4 mm.
    • User instructions: restrictions on use by children (not for ages 0–8; 8+ only with supervision), keep cord and appliance out of reach of children < 8, and cleaning/user maintenance must not be performed by children.
    • Guidance on safe positioning (stable location, handle orientation to avoid spillage).
  • Heating and temperature rise
    • Continuous monitoring during temperature-rise tests; limits given in Table 3 and new Table Z101.
    • Table Z101 – maximum temperature rises (K) under normal operation: bare metal 45 K; coated metal 55 K; glass/ceramic 60 K; plastic (>0.3 mm) 65 K.
    • Notes clarify coating thicknesses, exclusions (hot functional surfaces, vessels containing oil, handles, certain cavities), and allowance: if construction prevents meeting limits, temperature rise may be up to twice the values but must include a warning label.
    • Measurement guidance (clause 11.Z101): defines normal operation conditions and surfaces/areas where temperature rises are not measured (e.g., lids, within 25 mm of lid edges or ventilation openings, underside inaccessible to probe 41 per EN 61032).

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers and designers of household fryers, frying pans and woks (product safety design, labelling, thermal tests).
  • Test laboratories performing compliance and type testing against EN 60335‑2‑13 requirements.
  • Conformity assessors, certification bodies and regulatory compliance teams ensuring alignment with LVD and national implementation.
  • Procurement and safety managers specifying safe appliances for domestic, hotel and similar environments.
