Overview

EN 14322:2021 (CEN) defines the definition, requirements and classification for melamine faced boards (MFB) intended for interior uses, primarily in furniture. The standard specifies surface requirements, dimensional tolerances and inspection principles that apply to particleboards, extruded particleboards, fibreboards and sandwich boards when surfaced by melamine-impregnated papers. It excludes HPL/finish foils (EN 438) and laminate floor coverings.

Keywords: EN 14322:2021, melamine faced boards, MFB, surface requirements, dimensional tolerances, furniture, formaldehyde, EN 14323.

Key Topics

  • Scope and definition

    • MFB: boards produced by applying uncured aminoplastic (mainly melamine) resin-impregnated papers to one or both faces and curing by heat and pressure without intermediate adhesive.
  • Surface and dimensional requirements

    • Boards must meet factory dispatch requirements (see EN 14323 test methods). Typical parameters include thickness tolerances, length/width tolerances, flatness and limits on edge damage and surface defects. Specific tolerance classes and values are defined in the standard.
  • Appearance and colour matching

    • Colour comparison may be done visually (light box) or via spectral measurement technology (ISO 13655 / EN ISO 11664-6). Acceptance criteria (visual rating or similarity index) are agreed between supplier and purchaser. Matching boards from the same production batch is recommended for side-by-side installations.
  • Surface texture

    • Texture matching is assessed per EN 14323; only slight deviation (rating 4) is normally acceptable.
  • Abrasion classification

    • MFB are classified into five abrasion classes based on the initial wear point (IP):
      • Class 1: IP < 50 revolutions
      • Class 2: IP ≥ 50
      • Class 3A: IP ≥ 150
      • Class 3B: IP ≥ 250
      • Class 4: IP ≥ 350
    • Tests for classification reference EN 14323.
  • Formaldehyde release

    • Two classes: E1 and E2. EN 717-1 and EN ISO 12460-3 are the referenced test methods. Class E1 corresponds to a chamber result ≤ 0.124 mg/m³ (air); factory production control limits are also given (EN 14322, Annex B).
  • Marking and verification

    • Required marking: manufacturer ID, substrate EN reference and type (e.g., MFB EN 312 P2), nominal thickness, formaldehyde class and batch number. Verification uses test methods in EN 14323 with factory production control and optional external control.

Applications

  • Interior furniture components and panels where decorative surface appearance, controlled dimensional tolerances and wear resistance are required.
  • Specification reference for manufacturers, purchasers and specifiers to ensure colour consistency, surface quality, abrasion performance and compliance with emission limits.

Related Standards

  • EN 14323 - Melamine faced boards: test methods referenced throughout EN 14322
  • EN 717-1, EN ISO 12460-3 - Formaldehyde emission test methods
  • EN 311 - Surface soundness
  • EN 320 - Screw withdrawal resistance
  • EN 438-1 / EN 438-2 - High-pressure decorative laminates (not applicable to MFB per EN 14322)

For procurement and quality control, reference EN 14322:2021 together with EN 14323 and substrate standards (EN 312, EN 622, EN 14755 or CEN/TS 16526) to ensure complete product specification and compliance.
