Small craft - Inboard petrol engines - Engine-mounted fuel and electrical components (ISO 15584:2001)

This International Standard specifies requirements for the design and installation of engine-mounted fuel and
electrical system components on inboard petrol engines for minimizing fuel leakage and protecting against ignition
of surrounding flammable gases on small craft of hull length up to 24 m.
The following types of engines are exempt from the application of this International Standard:
 engines in personal watercraft as defined by ISO 13590 (see the bibliography);
 outboard engines.

_ motorji v osebnih vodnih plovilih, kot jih določa standard ISO 13590 (glej bibliografijo);
_ izven krmni motorji.

EN ISO 15584:2017 - Small craft: engine-mounted fuel & electrical components

Overview

EN ISO 15584:2017 (ISO 15584:2001 endorsed) defines safety requirements for engine-mounted fuel and electrical components on inboard petrol engines fitted to small craft (hull length up to 24 m). The standard is intended to minimize fuel leakage and reduce the risk of ignition of flammable gases in the engine compartment. It excludes outboard engines and personal watercraft. The document also supports conformity with EU Directive 2013/53/EU for recreational craft (see informative Annex ZA).

Key topics & technical requirements

  • Design and installation requirements for engine-mounted components (carburettors, fuel pumps, filters, piping, hoses).
  • Ignition protection of electrical components capable of producing sparks (in accordance with ISO 8846).
  • Fuel containment and leak prevention:
    • Metallic fuel piping or fire-resistant fuel hoses that meet ISO 7840 with permanent end fittings.
    • Components must withstand exposure to fire (2.5 min free-burning fuel test per ISO 10088).
    • Operating temperature range: –10 °C to +80 °C; storage: –30 °C to +80 °C.
  • Carburettor and throttle-body requirements:
    • Backfire flame arresters per ISO 13592.
    • Venting to be internal to the air-induction system unless flame-arresting.
    • Pressure limits: fuel-pump pressure to carburettors not to exceed 70 kPa; carb float to resist 80 kPa; throttle bodies to resist 350 kPa.
  • Mechanical robustness and corrosion resistance:
    • Conditioning tests include shock/vibration cycles and a 96 h salt spray (ISO 9227).
  • Installation documentation: manufacturers must provide clear installation instructions; all engine-fuel connections should be accessible for inspection and maintenance.

Practical applications & users

Who uses EN ISO 15584:2017:

  • Marine engine manufacturers - to design engine-mounted fuel/electrical components compliant with safety rules.
  • Boat and small craft builders - for safe integration of inboard petrol engines.
  • Marine equipment designers & suppliers - to select compliant hoses, pumps, filters and ignition-protected electrical devices.
  • Installers, surveyors and certification bodies - to verify conformity with EU Directive 2013/53/EU and national regulations. Practical uses include specifying acceptable materials, testing procedures, installation layouts, and maintenance accessibility to reduce fire and leakage risks on small craft.

Related standards

  • ISO 7840 - Fire-resistant fuel hoses
  • ISO 8846 - Ignition protection for electrical devices
  • ISO 13592 - Backfire flame arresters
  • ISO 9227 - Salt spray (corrosion) test
  • ISO 10088 - Permanently installed fuel systems (referenced)

ISO 15584:2001(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 15584 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 188, Small craft.
