Overview

ISO 24060-2:2023 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) focusing on ships and marine technology. This second part of the ISO 24060 series specifies the requirements for electronic service reports used in ship software logging systems (SSLS) for operational technology. The standard defines a digital format for service reports completed by service providers after software maintenance events on shipboard equipment. These reports are submitted to shipowners for integration into the ship software logging system, ensuring consistent documentation, transparency, and traceability of software maintenance activities.

Key Topics

  • Service Report Content Requirements: The standard outlines mandatory content for electronic service reports, ensuring completeness and uniformity. Key information includes:

    • Ship details: shipowner, ship name, IMO number, and MMSI number.
    • Service provider and technician information: names, contact details, and employee IDs.
    • Equipment and software details: manufacturer, model, serial number, software version history.
    • Maintenance event specifics: purpose (defect resolution, feature release, compliance, security, or obsolescence), date, and location of service.
  • Cyber Security Documentation: ISO 24060-2 emphasizes cybersecurity during maintenance by requiring documentation related to removable media usage, authorization, anti-virus scans, network setting changes, and connection management during the maintenance process.

  • Technical and Operational Checks: The service report must include detailed descriptions of maintenance work, outcomes, software version after maintenance, hardware changes, and results from operational tests or demonstrations conducted post-maintenance.

  • Signatures and Validation: Digital or handwritten signatures are required from technicians to verify report accuracy and from ship representatives to confirm acceptance, encouraging authenticity and preventing tampering.

  • Additional Information: The standard allows inclusion of supplementary comments, diagnostic reports, training certificates of service providers, and clear statements of service costs, ensuring a comprehensive record.

Applications

ISO 24060-2:2023 serves as a critical tool in maritime operations for:

  • Shipowners and Operators: Facilitating structured, standardized logging of software maintenance events improves maintenance tracking, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

  • Service Providers: Enables clear, consistent reporting of maintenance activities, supporting effective communication with shipowners and ensuring accountability.

  • Ship Software Logging Systems (SSLS): Supports integration of service reports into SSLS platforms, advancing automation and transparency in software lifecycle management aboard ships.

  • Cybersecurity Management: Provides protocols for documenting cyber risk mitigation during maintenance, enhancing overall vessel cybersecurity posture.

  • Regulatory and Classification Bodies: Helps verify that ship software and operational technology maintenance complies with international regulations and industry best practices.

Related Standards

  • ISO 24060:2021 – The foundational part of the series, defining the overall Ship Software Logging System (SSLS) framework for shipboard operational technology software management.

  • BIMCO and CIRM Industry Standards (2017) – Provide initial guidelines on software maintenance procedures that underpin ISO 24060 standards development.

  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 and Part 2 – Outline procedures and editorial rules for preparing and maintaining ISO standards.

  • Related Cybersecurity Standards – Complement ISO 24060-2 by addressing risk management and network security protocols relevant to shipboard operational technology.

Implementing ISO 24060-2:2023 facilitates streamlined software maintenance documentation on ships, supports compliance with maritime software management requirements, and enhances operational reliability and cybersecurity for modern vessel technologies. Shipowners, service providers, and maritime IT professionals benefit from adhering to this globally recognized standard for electronic service reporting.

iv
Introduction
In 2017, BIMCO and CIRM published an industry standard that outlined effective software maintenance
procedures to support maintenance activities throughout the full software lifecycle. Based on this
standard, the International Standardization Organization in July 2021 published ISO 24060 that defines
a Ship Software Logging System (SSLS) for shipboard equipment software and takes steps to automate
the maintenance and management of software on a ship.
The working group developing ISO 24060 understood that it needed to take a step-by-step approach in
developing the standards necessary to fully address the industry needs related to ship software logging
because of the widespread variance in the sophistication of shipboard IT systems. ISO 24060 laid the
necessary groundwork to implement a Ship Software Logging System (SSLS) for shipboard equipment
software. This document addresses requirements for ship software service reports. It builds upon the
procedures/processes/approaches outlined in ISO 24060 regarding logging
