Abstract

This International Standard specifies test specimens and procedures for fatigue testing at ambient conditions, under repeated tensile loading, generating cross-tension loading to the bonded plates of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs) to metal assemblies. The specimen undergoes cyclically stress, comprising an alternating stress on a static stress which represents the mean stress. This allows for estimating the safety condition regarding the fatigue resistance of joints. The method is intended for testing bonded plates used in bonding CFRPs to metal assemblies.

ISO 25218 is an ISO International Standard for testing the cross-tension fatigue properties of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs) and metal assemblies. It specifies test specimens and procedures for repeated tensile loading at ambient conditions so users can evaluate the fatigue resistance of bonded CFRP-to-metal joints and judge their safety condition.

What does ISO 25218 specify?

ISO 25218 specifies a fatigue test method for bonded plates used in CFRP-to-metal assemblies. The document covers the specimen, the apparatus, the procedure, and the test report, so a laboratory can prepare the joint, run the cyclic test, and record results in a consistent way.

The scope is limited to ambient-condition fatigue testing under repeated tensile loading that creates cross-tension loading in the bonded plates. ISO 25218 is aimed at bonded plates joined with adhesive or other specified methods, and the document is organized into Clauses 1 to 7 plus one informative annex.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AAn informative example of a cross tension fatigue test for an adhesive-bonded CFRP plate to aluminium, including specimen preparation, testing jig, stress cycle, and example S-N curves

What are the key requirements of ISO 25218?

ISO 25218 is built around two things: a defined specimen and a controlled cyclic test procedure. In practice, this means the test only has value if the specimen geometry, adhesive layer, loading level, frequency, and reporting are kept within the document's framework.

Test specimen requirements

Clause 4 says the specimen size and geometry are the same as in ISO 24360. ISO 25218 uses two rectangular coupons, and the bonded area must be covered in the lapped region of each coupon.

Clause 4 gives two specimen types:

  • Type A - two rectangular coupons bonded to form a cross specimen.
  • Type B - a bonded CFRP/metal laminate is cut into a cross-shaped specimen and notched to the adhesive line.

For adhesive bonding, the adhesive layer must be carefully controlled and kept below 1 mm. Its thickness must stay consistent within one joint and from one joint to another, because layer thickness affects fatigue behavior and comparison between tests.

Test machine and monitoring

Clause 5 requires a testing machine with force measurement and extensometer systems of Class 1 or higher, as specified in ISO 7500-1 and ISO 9513. The machine must maintain accuracy throughout the test, measure frequency with ±2 % accuracy, and hold the jig securely without slippage.

The machine arrangement must allow visual monitoring of fatigue cracking on either side of the specimen or through suitable equipment. It must also record the load state and number of cycles, and it must not restart automatically after a power interruption. In practice, this avoids false results and makes interrupted tests traceable.

Test conditions and fatigue curve construction

Clause 6 says the specimen is mounted in jigs so the loading axis and specimen centerline coincide. The test frequency is normally between 10 Hz and 30 Hz unless otherwise specified, and the specimen should not heat excessively during testing.

ISO 25218 requires the test to be run under controlled mean stress or controlled stress ratio. The procedure also warns that adhesive joints may creep even at ambient temperature if mean stress is not chosen carefully, so the selected stress level must suit the material and intended use.

To build an S-N curve, Clause 6.2 requires static cross-tension strength first, using at least five specimens with the same configuration as ISO 24360. For the fatigue series, at least 10 specimens are used, with at least three stress amplitude levels covering the endurance range of interest.

Reporting the results

Clause 7 lists the minimum test report items. The report needs the standard used, the bonding process and conditions, material condition, specimen dimensions, bonded area, individual and statistical static strength values, the stress condition used for fatigue testing, failure description, and the S-N curve or fatigue limit.

For a buyer, engineer, or lab manager, that report structure matters because it ties the fatigue result back to the specimen build, the joint process, and the loading history.

What terms does ISO 25218 define?

ISO 25218 defines the terms needed to read and run the test without ambiguity.

  • Cross tension fatigue test - a fatigue test that applies repeated tensile load to a cross-tension specimen in a fatigue-testing machine.
  • Stress - tensile force divided by the bonded surface area.
  • Static cross-tension strength - the average static stress at rupture, determined by ISO 24360.
  • Mean stress - the average of the maximum and minimum stress in one cycle.
  • Stress amplitude - half the difference between maximum and minimum stress in one cycle.
  • Stress ratio - the minimum stress divided by the maximum stress in one cycle.
  • S-N curve - a curve that plots stress amplitude against fatigue life.
  • Fatigue life - the number of cycles applied before failure at a given stress.

Who uses ISO 25218?

ISO 25218 is used by test laboratories, materials engineers, adhesive specialists, quality managers, and design or certification teams working with CFRP-to-metal bonded joints. The introduction links it to aircraft development, type certification work, and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) evaluations.

In practice, users apply ISO 25218 to compare bonding methods, generate S-N curves, check fatigue resistance, and support decisions about whether a joint design is suitable for a given application.

Which standards are used with ISO 25218?

ISO 25218 relies on several other standards and cites related ones for context.

  • ISO 7500-1 - calibration and verification of the force-measuring system of the testing machine.
  • ISO 9513 - calibration of extensometer systems used in uniaxial testing.
  • ISO 10365 - designation of main failure patterns, used to describe how the joint failed.
  • ISO 24360 - the companion method for determining cross-tension strength and the specimen geometry referenced for this fatigue test.
  • ISO 13003 - cited in the bibliography as a related standard for fatigue properties under cyclic loading.
  • ISO 9664 - cited in the bibliography as a related standard for fatigue properties of structural adhesives in tensile shear.

What does the ISO 25218 document contain?

ISO 25218 contains specimen drawings, apparatus requirements, a step-by-step fatigue test procedure, and a report checklist. It also includes figures for Type A and Type B specimens, test jigs, the stress cycle, and a typical S-N curve.

Annex A gives an informative worked example for a CFRTP-to-aluminium adhesive joint. It shows how the specimen is loaded in cross tension, how the stress cycle is applied, and how S-N curves can be built from results at different stress frequencies.
