Overview
ISO 4175:1979 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that focuses on shipbuilding, specifically on shipborne barges, series 1. This standard details the main dimensions and critical constructional elements of barges that are designed to be carried aboard specialized vessels known as barge carriers.
The standard provides precise specifications to ensure interchangeability, safe handling, and compatibility with lifting equipment such as gantries, cranes, or floating docks. It applies to barges loaded onto shipborne lifting systems, supporting uniformity in the design and operation of these vital maritime components.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
ISO 4175:1979 specifies the principal dimensions of series 1 shipborne barges, including overall length, width, height, and draft. It also defines the dimensions of key construction elements, facilitating smooth loading, unloading, and stacking aboard barge carriers.Definition of Series 1 Barges
Series 1 barges are barges transported on a barge carrier vessel using a portico, elevator, or floating dock systems.Dimensional Specifications
The standard presents detailed dimensional tables for three barge categories (IA, IB, IC), including:- Length, width, and height
- Draft under loaded conditions
- Deadrise angle and displacement tonnage
Constructional Element Dimensions
To guarantee compatibility with standard lifting equipment, the standard fixes:- Distances between lifting points
- Maximum protrusion limits above the deck (152 mm between lifting posts; 610 mm in other areas)
- Size and location of supporting corners (designed to withstand a horizontal force of 1.78 MN)
Tolerance Guidelines
Tolerances for key dimensions ensure barge interchangeability and safe stowage, accounting for fabrication variations while ensuring functional compatibility with handling systems.
Practical Applications
ISO 4175:1979 serves as a fundamental guideline for shipbuilders, barge manufacturers, naval architects, and shipping operators involved in the design, construction, and operation of shipborne barges and barge carriers. Key practical benefits include:
Standardized Design
Facilitates production of barges with uniform dimensions, simplifying fleet management and maintenance.Safe Handling and Interchangeability
Guarantees that barges can be easily and safely lifted, stacked, and secured aboard barge carriers without structural interference or damage.Operational Efficiency
Optimizes loading and unloading times by using barges that fit precisely within lifting and stowage infrastructures.Global Compliance
Supports international trade and transport by providing a reference accepted in many countries, ensuring barges meet global marine engineering standards.
Related Standards
Professionals working with ISO 4175:1979 may also find the following standards relevant for broader maritime and shipbuilding contexts:
- ISO 19901 - Offshore structures - General criteria and design principles
- ISO 8686 - Shipbuilding - Tolerances for hull form and dimensions
- ISO 8943 - Mooring arrangements for floating structures
- IMO Load Line Regulations - International standards for the safe loading of vessels
Together, these standards support comprehensive safety, reliability, and efficiency in the construction and operation of maritime carriers and their cargo units.
By adhering to ISO 4175:1979, stakeholders ensure shipborne barges conform to internationally recognized dimensional and constructional criteria, enhancing safety, interoperability, and commercial viability across the maritime industry.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards institutes (ISO member bodies). The work of developing Interna-
tional Standards is carried out through lS0 technical committees. Every member body
interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to
be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council.
International Standard ISO 4175 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8,
Shipbuiding, and was circulated to the member bodies in June 1978.
